Police warn Kooragang Island car enthusiasts: Don't Speed
17th January, 2005
Car enthusiasts travelling to and from Kooragang Island have been warned no
tolerance will be shown towards speeding or reckless driving.
Waratah
Local Area Commander, Superintendent Dave Swilks, said police would continue
targeting these offences in a series of operations.
“I have directed all
my traffic police that no tolerance will be shown to anyone who breaks the speed
limit,” Superintendent Swilks said.
“You are putting yourself and
everyone else on the roads in danger."
“Kooragang Island is an industrial
area with trucks, sometimes carrying dangerous goods, travelling through it at
irregular hours. It is also popular with fishermen and boating enthusiasts. The
potential for a serious crash is quite real.”
Superintendent Swilks said
a combination of high profile and covert enforcement programmes are conducted by
the Command’s police to promote road safety and reduce the number of crashes.
Larger operations had resulted in cars being confiscated for burnouts.
“During the weekend, one highway patrol car crew detected nine motorists
exceeding the speed limit in the Kooragang Island area, including three
travelling more than 30 kilometres per hour over the speed limit.
“Seven
of those speeding motorists were ‘P’ plate drivers travelling to the Kooragang
Island area,” he said.
“While you would consider the potential loss of
licence would be a deterring factor, a provisional licence holder was detected
at 106 kph in a 60 kph area, and had only been returned his ‘P’ licence recently
after a previous loss of licence for exceeding the speed limit.”
