Mitsubishi Verada GTVi AWD road test We remember a great car |
The AWD Magna and Verada models didn't last long on the market. But they certainly made an impact. We rated these AWDs as the nations best family sized car. But that is history now as these models have been replaced by the new front-wheel drive Mitsubishi 380. We'll have a road test on the all-new locally-built 380 soon, but in the meantime we'll have a quick look at the excessively impressive AWD Verada. Last year, we road tested the Magna VR-X AWD and you can see our report here. The Verada AWD is one of those few cars which immediately provides an impressive drive. As soon as you accelerate away from your parking space, you get the feeling that this car is gripping the road, rather well, on all fours. It's a good feeling and it improves as you begin to drive further and further. The steering provides the right amount of feel and the ride is just right (not too firm and not too soft). The handling is very good and the brakes are fine. The sporty tone in the exhaust is very discreet. In fact, it is my view that all aspects of this car convey the right message. Mitsubishi Verada GTVi Click the image for a larger view The price for the last new Verada GTVi AWD was around $47,490 (RRP), which represented excellent value. You got a well built car that was superb to drive. On top of that the Verada came well equipped, just as you would expect from the luxury version of the popular Magna. For example, the leather seats were excellent. Sure, the Magna and Verada AWD models are history now, but nothing will ever take away the fact that these cars were excellent value and performed brilliantly and thus earned a reputation that every car makers wants for their own models. The used car market is bound to enjoy these models in the years ahead. Good examples are sure to be highly prized by buyers seeking a strong car which provides a high degree of satisfaction to the driver. Mitsubishi has had its ups and downs in recent times. Clearly, the re-emergence of Mitsubishi is good news for consumers. Sadly, though, the re-emergence excludes the possibility of Mitsubishi offering a large locally manufactured AWD sedan.
