Holden Statesman (WL series)
|
|||
As the new WM series Statesman and Caprice models begin to appear in Holden dealer showrooms, we
take a look back at the outgoing WL series Statesman. We commence our 516 km run between Sydney and Newcastle and around the surrounding areas with a
positive impression of Holden's big car, having been impressed by the WL series Caprice. Indeed,
our last drive in a Statesman, way back in early 2004 also provided proof that Holden knows how to
impress big car buyers. At that time, we drove around southern Victoria and you can see that report
here. Motoring is a breeze in the big Statesman. Even when fitted with the standard V6 you can
appreciate the adequate performance levels as the power is readily available and the general
feeling that is evident in a Statesman is more about comfort rather than performance. And comfort abounds in this car, as the seating is particularly comfortable. Sure, the optional
leather seating (which is standard in the Caprice) is nice, but I must admit that the Statesman's
standard velour seating is both attractive and pleasant to experience. It feels good and it suits
the Statesman's 'character'. In fact, I prefer the Statesman's interior moreso than that of the
Caprice! With a wheelbase of over 2.9 metres, the (approximately) 5.2 metre long Statesman has plenty of
room. And the luggage space is big, too! So roominess and comfort are two obvious attributes. But there is more. The quality of the
fittings and the easiness of the controls all contribute to the uncomplicated feeling of well
being in this car. The on-road qualities are very suitable for this big car. The steering and braking are very good. Despite the large physically size of the Statesman, the big Holden handles and rides just like a big Holden. And that means smooth and comfortable, with a little firmness to provide a secure feeling. The handling is very good and it feels just like a Commodore to me. Oh, it is a Commodore you may suggest. Of course, you are partly correct. And because of that Commodore connection, the Statesman has very good road manners. So that is a good thing! Is it any wonder that the Statesman is a favourite amongst big car buyers? The challenge for Holden is to ensure the key attributes of the WL are recognised in the new WM series. And we're all about to find that out! |
