Audi A4 2.0 litre turbo road test Top Turbo Treat! |
One thing is very clear when you look at Australian vehicle sales ..... Audi sales are booming! Whilst Alfa Romeo, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz and Saab sales are down on a year to date basis, Audi along with BMW, Peugeot and Volvo have increased their sales. And the increase in unit sales for Audi has been sufficient to make the increase in Audi's market share noticeable! To be specific, Audi YTD sales (January to October) are up from 2,844 in 2004 to 4,002 in 2005. The new A4 is one reason why Audi sales are rapidly rising! The revised model, with its new corporate face is available with an increased selection of engines. The available engine choices range from the 2 litre FSI, through two turbocharged versions (the 1.8 litre Turbo and the 2 litre turbo FSI), a superb 2 litre TDi (diesel) which has just become available in Australia and the powerful 3.2 litre V6 which is the largest engine available in the new A4. Beyond the A4 range is the A4 based high performance model, the S4 with its mighty 4.2 litre V8. The wide selection of engines make the A4 a very interesting model range to consider. We'll look at several A4 models over a period of time. On this occasion, though, we look at the 2.0 litre turbo with the multitronic (automatic) transmission. That should be sufficient to excite many drivers, as the new Golf GTI is a particularly pleasing car. The engine is an award winner too. Read about the award here. The A4 range is priced from $47,300 (RRP) for the 2.0 litre manual sedan. The 2.0 litre turbo, the subject of this test, is priced from $61,750 (RRP). In looking at the market, we readily recognised that, at this price, Audi is being serious in their endeavours to the put more A4s on Australian roads. But is it possible to make the A4 2.0 turbo even more desirable? Sure, just spend an extra $4,150 and get the same package with quattro! Of course, quattro is Audi-speak for its highly successful AWD system. |

But we expect an Audi to deliver superb manners as we go about the business of driving from A to B. The A4 delivers no surprises, but simply goes about its business in the traditional Audi manner. Every aspect of each drive was just as we anticipated. The Audi A4 2.0 turbo produces a satisfying driving experience. The quality of Audi's construction technique is evident. But most of all, the dynamics of driving are impressive in this model. The engine and transmission combination, together with the steering and braking, along with the ride and handling ensure a most rewarding behind-the-wheel experience. The quality Audi look and finish impressed us and the comfort provided in this compact sized car is excellent. Of course, leather trim and air bags are standard equipment. At $61,750 (RRP) we believe the Audi A4 2.0 turbo is good value. Certainly, the magnificent 2-litre turbocharged engine propels the car quite well and provides good fuel economy. The comfort of the A4 and its driving qualities equate to an immensely satisfying experience. No-one should expect less from Audi. And we certainly don't! Yes, Audi sales are rising rapidly. The way I see it, the A4 2.0 turbo makes it abundantly clear that there will be many more executives and professionals switching over to Audi too!
