The Kia Rio is a popular little car. It's made in South
Korea and is available as a hatchback or sedan. It's Kia's entry level model into their expanding
range of vehicles in Australia.
The current Rio has been with us for a number of years now and it will be replaced by an all-new
model in about a year's time.
Whilst the Kia Rio suits those on a budget it doesn't skimp on styling. It's a nice looking little
car that is relatively conservative but practical on numerous accounts. Two adults with a good sense
of humour can sit in the back seat with entry and egress being managed through the back doors as the
Rio has no two-door variants in the current line-up.
Power comes from a choice between a 1.4 litre or a 1.6 litre four-cylinder engine, which produces
70 kW or 82 kW of power respectively. Transmission choices are a five-speed manual or a four-speed
automatic with either engine. The emission rating is particularly good at around 159 grammes per
kilometre on the combined cycle. It's Euro IV compliant and guilt-free for those wanting to play a
role in emission reduction as there are not many cars that beat this low pollution figure.
Fuel consumption is also kind. Either engine and transmission combination will use just 6.6 or
6.7 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined cycle based on the standard test formula.
Two airbags are fitted to each model, whilst the Si model have optionally available side and
curtain airbags. These optional safety items are well worthy of the extra expense, especially in a
light car.
Nimble on the road, the little Rio offers a comfortable ride for commuting. We managed to cover
478 kms in city and suburban driving conditions around Melbourne. There's power steering, but no
cruise control with the Rio. The steering wheel adjusts up and down only, but there is a driver's
footrest. The air conditioning is better than some competitors and there are numerous interior
storage points.
The Kia Rio is basic motoring, but it comes with exceptional value. It's a neat little car!
