***** START *****

Our subject car, today, is one that maintains quite a low profile. Yet this interesting Japanese car fulfils a worthwhile role by offering versatility with very good value as a key component of the equation. It's a hatchback that offers a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

The Suzuki SX4 is offered in two trim levels, the base model and the "S". The motive power comes from a two-litre four-cylinder engine which provides suitable performance, rather than a startling degree of 'get-up-and-go'.

Entry and egress is easy and the seating is 'comfy'. The back seat is good for two adults with the cushion positioned at a relevant height for those in the rear making rear seat comfort better than many cars in this class. There are numerous hide-away storage areas. The boot is useful and a handy sized area is available below the boot floor. Visibiity is excellent and the driving dynamics are good, making the Suzuki SX4 a much better car than first perceptions may suggest.

During our drive, we managed to 'clock-up' some 831 kilometres around Melbourne including a drive out to Moe in the West Gippsland region. On that basis we managed quite a good variety of urban and country driving experiences. Our average fuel consumption was 8.3 litres per 100 kilometres, which is quite reasonable given that the vast majority of our drive was city based. The factory suggest the combined cycle consumption is 7.6 litres per 100 kilometres for the front-wheel drive automatic version.

Electronic Stability Programme (commonly known as ESP) is standard as are numerous other safety and convenience features.

The small car market is very competitive with consumers having the potential of a bewildering array of choices. Yet, despite its low profile in the marketplace, the Suzuki SX4 offers a sensible choice of motoring with excellent value amongst its key attributes.
