***** START *****
Sales of SUVs continue the upward trend of recent years.
In fact, SUV sales are booming. This indicates there is scant regard in the marketplace for fuel
economy as the major purchasing consideration.
Numerous brands are catering for the demand for SUVs by expanding their line-up.
Today, we see SUVs in small, medium and large packages. And the prestige brands are in the market
too. Additionally, more and more brands are offering two-wheel drive alongside the more traditional
all-wheel drive versions. This is a good marketing tool, as not all buyers will need the traction of
all-wheel drive. And not everyone needs the added expense!
Our drive car, on this occasion, is the Hyundai ix35. A relatively new, smaller SUV which replaces
the Tucson which was Hyundai's first entry into the small SUV market.
The drive car was the top-of-the-line Highlander model. The specifications of the test car
included the two-litre diesel engine, six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
We found the diesel somewhat noisey. However, the good news here is that the model year 2011
editions will have additional sound deadening material. This, I'm sure, will be appreciated.
The new ix 35 models, which are arriving soon, are priced from $26,990 (that being the
manufacturer's list price, excluding the traditional on-road costs). The ix35 Highlander diesel auto
will be priced at $38,490 (again, that's the manufacturer's list price).
The Hyundai ix35 diesel offers zippy performance, although on our city based drive we averaged 10.5
litres per 100 kilometres which is marginal higher than the factory figure.
