***** START *****

The Volkswagen Golf has been with us for decades. Now in its sixth generation, the VW Golf still offers reasonable economy and a handy-sized hatchback for satisfying, if not exciting motoring.

Available with a petrol or diesel engine, the Volkswagen Golf is now on offer at an exceptional value-based price of just $21,990 for a base model with a tiny 1.2 litre 4-cylinder engine matched to a six-speed manual transmission. Now this price, of course, is the Manufacturer's List Price which excludes the traditional add-ons, such as the dealer delivery fees and the various statutory charges which come from the state and territory governments. The Golf is also available in sporty versions, such as the GTI and the new R. A station wagon version is also available now. Although the coupe version, the Scirocco, has never made it to Australia.

Our drive car on this occasion is the Golf diesel automatic hatch. At $34,490 (that's the Manufacturer's List Price) without options, this small hatchback offers a great package with all the features required for enjoyable motoring. Of course, for those who want more, Volkswagen have a long list of options to entice more dollars from your savings account.

Offering a comfortable interior ... not too big and not too small. With good ride qualities, the VW Golf provides an easy car to manage.

Next Car has driven many thousands of kilometres in various Golf models over the past five years. The new 6th generation model is as satisfying as the previously highly rated fifth generation.

With a little bit of fiddling with the equipment levels and drivetrains, the huge German company seems to have a Golf for almost any budget. And there's nothing wrong with that as the company endeavours to make one of Europe's most popular cars more commonplace here in Australia.
