Australians are continuing to buy SUVs in increasing
numbers. During August, for example, SUV sales increased thirty two and a half per cent over the same
period from last year.
One of our favourite SUVs, at Next Car, is the Mitsubishi Outlander. This mid-size SUV now features
Mitsubishi's stylish "jet fighter" grille.
A wide variety of models are available, priced from $28,990 to $51,990. These prices are, of
course, the manufacturer's list prices which excludes on-road costs.
The Outlander offers a choice of petrol-fuelled engines. There is the 2.4-litre four-cylinder and
a 3-litre V6. We prefer the four-cylinder. Sure, the V6 offers excellent performance but the
four-cylinder offers reasonable performance but it comes with slightly better fuel consumption.
The Outlander is quite a pleasant drive experience.
One interesting aspect of the Mitsubishi Outlander is the deal between Mitsubishi and Peugeot. The
Outlander is provided to Peugeot who market their version as the Four Thousand Seven. The Peugeot
variant is only available with a 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel engine.
You would expect a modern day badge-engineered model to be a direct 'clone' of the original, just
as it was in the good old days. But not so, the French marque has "Peugeotised" its version very
nicely indeed.
Not only does Four Thousand Seven have a distinctive front-end but even simple things such as
the turn indicators have been converted to, shall we say, the wrong side of the steering column.
Whilst Peugeot aren't selling many of their Four Thousand Seven, Mitsubishi are meeting great
success with their Outlander.
It has a good use of its space, an airy interior and demonstrates good behaviour out on the road.
