***** START *****
Years ago, six-cylinder mid-sized sedans came into
vogue. It was late 1969 when the Holden Torana 6 became popular. It was followed by six-cylinder
versions of the Ford Cortina, Chrysler Centura and even the Morris Marina. Even the Mitsubishi Magna
eventually went down the six-cylinder 'road'.
Nissan joined this popular market segment with their six-cylinder version of the Bluebird, which
was known as the Maxima. It completed more directly, at the time, with Toyota's Cressida.
Although Nissan didn't rush bringing the Maxima to Australia, it did eventually make it here.
Since then the Nissan Maxima has both won and lost 'converts'. It's styling has the ability to win
and lose buyers.
However, the current Nissan Maxima has more conservative styling than the previous model.
Next Car has driven the current Nissan Maxima Ti sedan for over 500 kilometres around
Melbourne and environs.
This top-of-the-line model has a Manufacturer's List Price from $46,990, although the entry
level model is priced from $33,990.
The roominess of this 4-door sedan is a feature and it has excellent presentation. It drives
well and is a natural fit for the lower-end of the prestige segment of Australia's expansive new
car market.
The 3.5-litre V6 engine is matched to a six-speed automatic transmission. Performance is quite
good and the car rides in a smooth and, importantly, a quiet manner.
The Nissan Maxima has matured into a worthy sedan and is very suitable for those wanting to
move away from the ordinary.
