FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK

The Editor - a shady character!

Stephen Walker - Editor
road testing a Mitsubishi Lancer
this week

Friends,

In the old days, horses wore 'blinkers' so they wouldn't be disturbed by any nearby 'goings-on'. But it seems yesteryear's blinkers have been recycled by certain executives. BMW believe their new and much anticipated 1-series has no competitors. They suggest they are pioneering the premium compact market. This makes me wonder where the Alfa Romeo 147 and the Audi A3 sit in the market. And what about the Mercedes-Benz A-class? And then there's the upper-end of more regular models, such as the Impreza WRX and the Bora V5. We won't mention BMW's own Mini Cooper! Then there's many other cars which will be in the same price range, which people will no doubt consider and compare when they select their next new lifestyle option. Cars such as 307CC, TF and MX5. Blinkers were worn during the horse-drawn era and I believe they are still being worn today!

Warm regards,
Stephen Walker

  • LOOKING BACK

After World War II, factories around the world switched back to their normal routines. But Rover's Coventry factory was damaged during the "blitz". Arrangements with the government seen Rover move to Solihull.

One of the new products to follow the relocation was the model designated the P4, which appeared in 1949. Over the years, there would be numerous model variations. Namely, 60, 75, 80, 90, 95, 100, 105 and 110. Powered by a 4 or a 6 cylinder engine, these cars would provide Rover with a fine reputation. Silently strong, unpretentiously proud .... what else could you say about these Best of British saloons.

Over 130,000 P4's were produced between 1949 and 1964. It's career finally concluded after the introduction of the stunning P6, the Rover 2000.

    EDITOR'S
    PICK OF THE WEEK

After reading the news of this week, which story did you appreciate the most?

I liked John Taylor's achievement with the Peugeot 307 diesel wagon. What an amazing result..... just 3.5 litres of fuel for every 100 kms (average). This is almost beyond belief. But it's been verified and it's a milestone in automotive history!

    LOOKING BACK

The original Mustang was based on the Ford Falcon. It provided Ford with an easy method of expanding their model range to attract new customers. The Mustang's success is legendary, as a whole new market segment came along in it's wake. Pony cars, as they were called, included competitors such as AMC Javelin, Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger, Mercury Cougar, Plymouth Barracuda and Pontiac Firebird. Today, only the Mustang remains. And you should see the 2005 edition! It looks every bit as good as the original did in it's day!
