FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK

Friends,

What is it with diesel fuel bowsers? I've noticed diesel bowsers are dirty in Newcastle and Sydney and I've heard it's the same in Brisbane. There seems to be a marketing opportunity for an oil company who wants to provide clean pumps for their customers. Clean bowsers will attract more customers. I say that because some bowsers are so stained by fuel spills that they aren't inclined to encourage me to return for additional sales. Let me know if you know of a clean diesel bowser. I'm sure others will appreciate the advice.

Our Silly Suburban Signs segment continues in this issue. Now don't think that the signage shown today is the only NSW blunder we have recorded. No, don't think that ..... because we have another blunder coming up at a later time.

Warm regards,
Stephen Walker

LOOKING BACK

1997 Ford Falcon XR8 utility - XH series

1997 Ford Falcon XR8 utility
(XH series)

The V8 Ford Falcon ute returned in late 1997 after an absence of 15 years.

Ford reintroduced its 5-litre V8 engine into the Falcon Ute as an extra cost option on the ‘S’ automatic and marketed a new model -- the XR8 Utility -- which was fitted with a high performance V8 as standard.

The XR8 Ute was powered by a higher performance, sequential multi-point fuel injected 5-litre V8, which raised its maximum power to 185 kW (248 bhp) at 4500 rpm (from 170 kW). This engine had just been made available in the EL series Falcon XR8 sedan.

1949 Land Rover Series 1 station wagon

1949 Land Rover
Series 1 station wagon

LOOKING BACK

The original Land Rover Series 1 quickly established itself as a most competent vehicle for a wide variety of off-road application. The Solihull car manufacturer – Rover, realised that there might be a market for a more comfortable model, where the car could be used on the road or to transport people, whilst still being as capable as its basic counterpart.

The coachbuilder Tickford was commissioned to design the new model – to be known as the station wagon – and conceived an all-metal rear body on a wooden frame. Inside there was space for seven people, with the addition of four folding seats in the rear, which could be removed for extra storage space. Access for those in the rear was by the front passenger door and at the back there was a split, folding tailgate. The body was finished to a high standard, with a larger single piece windscreen, winding windows and even a metal cover to protect the bonnet mounted spare wheel.
