LOOKING BACK

1962 Volkswagen 1500

1962 Volkswagen 1500

To diversify its model line-up, Volkswagen produced the 1500. It was first shown at the International Automobile Exhibition in Frankfurt in 1961. By introducing this model the Volkswagen board made the company less dependent on the Beetle. Three versions went into full-scale production: the Saloon and the Coupé in September 1961, the Variant in February 1962. These models were in production until 1966.

The Editor's Pick Of The News

After reading the news, which story did you enjoy the most?

Last week we were excited with the new Peugeot 307 HDi. This week two new diesels models were announced in Europe .... the Audi A8 4.2 diesel and the Jaguar X-TYPE 2.2 diesel. Both are likely candidates for the pick of the week, together with our 'firsts', the Porsche Cayman S, the Volkswagen Jetta and the Mazda CX-7. But my pick for the news of the week is the story on the Hummer H3 because this model has big implications for Australia. Holden no longer has a mid-size 4x4 and Holden needs a real 4x4 and they need it now. This new model, the H3, is one step closer now that delivery to US dealers is underway. Assembly will begin in South Africa late next year. Not long after that the Hummer H3 will be here in Australia. Naturally, the Next Car team was first in Australia with the news that the Hummer will come to Australia and we're pleased to see that the career of the new H3 is underway ..... read our story ..... here.

In 1955 the Saab 92 was replaced by the Saab 93.

Power was from a 748 cc three cylinder engine, developing 33 bhp. The car featured new front-end styling plus totally new suspension and newly available tubeless tyres.

The 93 was replaced by the 96 in 1960, following the introduction of the 95 wagon in 1959.
