FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK

Friends,

The news is difficult to swallow. But it seems not one MG or Rover was sold across the nation during April. And it seems certain that the MG Rover Group will never produce another car. News from England suggests that the vultures have moved in and are shopping for bargains at the former Longbridge production plant. So yet again, two famous marques have come to the end of the road. Has anyone ever compiled a list of defunct marques? I don't want to see such a list. It will take far too much time to review!

Warm regards,
Stephen Walker

LOOKING BACK

1937 Lincoln Zephyr

1937 Lincoln Zephyr

The 1937 Lincoln Zephyr, shown here in the popular four-door sedan model, was the pinnacle of elegance and automotive style.

Next Car Is First Again With The News

Will we see a diesel powered Holden Astra in Australia?

In the 1980's Holden had a unsuccessful attempt to sell a Isuzu diesel powered Gemini sedan. The car was slow and the sales were no different.

But the times have changed. European diesels have advanced so far that they are now a better proposition than a petrol engined car.

The Next Car team has been greatly impressed by diesel powered models from Land Rover, Audi and Peugeot. Soon we're going to road test two diesel powered Volkswagen models. The strengths of the diesel engines from Europe are simple .... excellent performance and outstanding fuel economy. We give top marks to Audi, Land Rover and Peugeot. And we're looking forward to driving two very different Volkswagens. On this basis, we'd be keen to see an Astra diesel!

The Editor's Pick Of The News

After reading the news, which story did you enjoy the most?

Few cars are as stunning as an Audi S4. Even the most pickiest amongst us would have extreme difficulty in faulting the impressive (in every department) Audi S4. To see the release of the cabriolet finally take place in Australia is very good news indeed. Therefore this story becomes my pick of the news ..... read our story ..... here.

LOOKING BACK

1966 Lamborghini 400 GT

1966 Lamborghini 400 GT

The Lamborghini 400 GT, which featured Lamborghini's first in-house gearbox, managed to achieve 273 sales. It was the model that put Lamborghini on a firm footing to expand into the supercar market. The capacity of its V12 engine had been increased to 4-litres. The previous model, the 350 GT which appeared in 1964, had a 3.5 litre V12 engine.

New Release

On the 2nd September 2004 we showed the very first image of a production version of the new Volkswagen Golf GTI. We were ahead of every other Australian media outlet with the news on this new model. At the time, we mentioned Australian sales will commence mid-2005. Since then, the 5th generation Golf GTI has made its Australian debut. That was back in March at the Melbourne International Motor Show. It was confirmed then that the Golf GTI will be launched locally in May. Tomorrow, we'll be amongst the first to drive the new Golf GTI on an Australian road. Read our driving impressions on Sunday. And we'll have a full road test next month. In the meantime, our story from 2/9/04 is here and our story from 3/3/05 is here.
