NEXT CAR'S NEWSLETTER
16TH APRIL, 2004

WELCOME
to our newsletter #10

FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK

Friends,

Is there a car which surprises you when you drive it? Perhaps the Magna is such a car. Common perception seems to indicate the Magna is an also-ran type of car. But when you live with a car for a week, you get a different view than the view which you gain on a 10 km test drive! Our road test makes a few points about the Magna and it's major competitors.

There's plenty of news this week ..... as usual, we're first or amongst the first to spread the news! At the time of publishing this newsletter, only one other Australian automotive website is sharing our story of Peugeot's new numbering system and the Audi RS 6 plus announcement. We're getting used to being first!

After reading the Peugeot story, you may think it's 1st April again!

Warm regards,
Stephen Walker

    LOOKING BACK

The 100 mph Bentley S1, introduced in 1955, was the first new car to be both built and engineered at the new, post-WWII, factory in Crewe. Its softer styling made its more upright predecessors appear dated. The S1 was powered by a 4.9-litre six-cylinder engine, which also powered the latter versions of Bentley's previous model, the R-Type. The S1 was a foot longer than the R-Type. Automatic transmission was now standard. The S1 sold nearly 3,500 units. It was the last 6-cylinder Bentley. In 1959, the S1 was replaced by the Bentley S2, which was powered by a 6.25-litre V8.

Saloons were known as S1, whilst the less common coupes were named S1 Continental.

    EDITOR'S
    PICK OF THE WEEK

After reading the news of this week, which story did you appreciate the most?

American cars don't seem to be attractive any more. Have you thought this way in recent years? The new Zephyr seems to have changed this view though. Any improvement in the appearance of US cars needs to be encouraged, so this week I'm picking the new Lincoln Zephyr, which was revealed at last weeks New York Motor Show, as the pick of this weeks news!

    Mazda 6 sedan

    Mazda 6 V6

In America, the Mazda 6 is available with a 3-litre V6. But we won't see a V6 here. It's made in left-hand drive models only. There isn't a RHD version of the V6 powered Mazda 6 anywhere in the world. And there's currently no plans for RHD V6's.

    ROAD TEST

    Mitsubishi Magna ES

The Holden Commodore is the best selling large car in Australia. And the Ford Falcon is the trendiest. But neither of these two best sellers are better than the Mitsubishi Magna! Read our road test to see how the editor reached this conclusion.
