Europe's Top Seller |
9th March, 2005 The Volkswagen Golf is once again the most popular car in Europe. According to market analyst Polk Marketing Systems, the Golf regained the top of the registration statistics for Western Europe even in the first half of 2004. In the second half of the year, it was able to increase its lead by a greater margin. With approximately 569,000 registrations between January and December, it was about 72,000 units ahead of its nearest rival. The automotive research and consulting firm R.L. Polk Marketing Systems, based in Essen, Germany, analyses the registration statistics of the countries of Western Europe monthly. The Golf statistics include the two-door and four-door hatchback, the estate, and the salon (Bora). The fourth generation Golf was already the most popular car until 2001. However, it lost it top position to a competitor in 2002 and 2003. The fifth generation Golf has now won back this title. In Australia, the response to the fifth generation Golf has been equally strong. “The 2.0 litre FSI engine model and the TDI (Turbo Diesel) models are dominating the model mix.” said Volkswagen Group Australia’s Managing Director – Jutta Dierks. “We are very happy with the early results of the new Golf, but were caught somewhat by surprise by the strong demand for the diesel models, which are now 30% of the total Golf volume. However, I suppose we should not be too surprised considering we have the best value diesel passenger car in Golf, with a starting price of $27,990.” |
