Jackie Ickx Takes To The Road In A VW California
18th June, 2008 | |||||
Jackie Ickx, former Formula One driver, has taken delivery of a Volkswagen California camper and is planning to travel extensively around Europe and internationally in it to attend and compete in a variety of motor rallies and cross-country events. In the spirit of adventure for which Volkswagen campers are famous, Jackie’s travel plans for this summer already include travelling to Europe’s most northerly point, the North Cape in Norway, and possibly taking the Volkswagen California to the Pharaoh Rally in Egypt plus a tour from South America to California via one leg of the famous Route 66. The Volkswagen California is car-like to drive every day, yet quickly converts to a real home from home complete with two double beds, an electrically operated pop-up roof, cooker, fridge and sink, plus two folding chairs and a portable table stored neatly in the tailgate and side door. ‘This flexible camper is impressive not only because of all the space it offers,’ said Jackie Ickx, ‘but thanks to the 174 PS TDI diesel engine and 4MOTION all-wheel drive, together with some optional off-road accessories, this is the ideal vehicle for my trip,’ he continued. Stephan Grühsem, Head of Group Communications at Volkswagen AG, said: ‘We are delighted that a successful racing driver and car expert like Jackie Ickx has chosen the California. It says a lot about the quality of our products.’ Jackie Ickx competed in 116 Formula One races from 1968 to 1979, winning eight Grand Prix titles, and was also the runner-up world champion in 1969 and 1970. He also won the 24 hour Le Mans race six times between 1969 and 1982. |
