  • Australia's most affordable hybrid car

Toyota's hybrid Prius c range enters 2015 with a sportier exterior, sharper dynamics and an enhanced interior while resuming the mantle of Australia's most affordable hybrid car.

The upgraded Prius c is even better value with Toyota reducing prices by $1,000 on both grades - to $22,990* for the standard Prius c and $25,990* for the high-grade Prius c i-Tech.

In city driving, Prius c delivers the best fuel economy of any vehicle without a plug, rated at just 3.7 litres/100km, thanks to the combination of an efficient petrol engine and electric motor.

Toyota's executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the latest Prius c improvements add to the appeal of the car's innovative downsizing, smart packaging and targeted weight reductions.

"Prius c is a smaller and lighter sibling to the Prius hatch yet it still provides ample space for five adults thanks to Toyota's clever solutions," he said.

"A great example is the placement of the hybrid battery and fuel tank under the rear seat, which means there is also room for plenty of luggage and a full-size spare wheel."

When released a little earlier in the year, Mr Cramb said Prius c is one at least 10 new or refreshed models to be introduced by Toyota to the Australian market during the next 12 months.

"The entire Prius family will benefit with a mid-year update to Prius v and the arrival of an all-new fourth-generation Prius early next year."

"Our local manufacturing plant is also gearing up for the launch of the boldest Camry ever during the second quarter and an upgraded Aurion shortly after."

"We will have further new or upgraded model news to announce as we proceed through one of Toyota's busiest-ever launch years," Mr Cramb said.

Prius C Exterior

The refreshed exterior styling of the Prius c is dominated by a hexagonal grille that is more aggressive than the previous trapezoidal opening. It is flanked by reshaped headlights that provide a sharper look - halogen for the entry grade and a bi-LED lamp for i-Tech.

A redesigned front bumper adopts greater sculpting around the foglamps to an on-road stance that looks wider and more planted.

New wheel covers have been adopted for the 15-inch steel wheels on the standard car while the i-Tech retains its 15-inch alloys. Both grades have full-size wheel spares.

Rear combination lamps have been restyled with a more vertical design and LEDs are now used for the tail as well as the stop lights.

An updated paint palette includes three new vibrant colours: Tango (orange), Aura (light blue) and Zest (lime).

Prius C Interior

Inside, the Prius c now imparts a higher-quality feel with new colour themes that employ darker hues, including black glossy surrounds and soft-touch dash cladding on i-Tech version.

New fabric upholstery on the standard grade is black with dark blue facings while the i-Tech's dark-grey seats feature silver stitching, which also appears on the steering wheel.

Deep blue accents for Prius c and silver highlights for i-Tech are used in areas such as the leading face of the dash panel, the front-passenger open tray, and on the door armrest.

The centre stack has been revised with larger switches and a multi-purpose climate-control dial that includes the standard automatic air-conditioning function.

Ride Comfort

Under the 'skin', improvements to the structure and suspension - including retuned front and rear shock absorbers - have improved ride comfort, steering response, stability and cornering.

Additional spot welds in the rear-wheel housings enhance body stiffness and contribute to improved handling.

The front MacPherson strut bearings have been strengthened to help provide a more linear steering feel from initial turn-in. The characteristics and length of the front rebound stoppers have also been refined to achieve a more natural forward-tilting posture while cornering.

The upgraded Prius c range adopts a greater use of Toyota Super Olefin Polymer (TSOP) and Thermo Plastic Olefin (TPO) materials for easier recycling.

Prius C Effeciency

Like all Toyota hybrids, the Prius c is a full hybrid, meaning it can run on the petrol engine alone, the battery alone,or a combination of both.

Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive combines the output of a petrol engine and electric motor through an innovative planetary-type continuously variable transmission.

Combined maximum power output is 74kW from the highly efficient 54kW 1.5-litre petrol engine and a 45kW electric motor. Maximum torque is 111Nm from the engine and 169Nm from the motor.

On the combined fuel consumption test cycle, Prius c has a rating just 3.9 litres/100km using 91 RON regular unleaded petrol. CO2 emissions are 90 grammes/km.

The car's petrol engine is generally switched off to save fuel when the vehicle is stationary, coasting or braking, and when it is reversing.

Prius c's hybrid system prioritises electric power for take-off, low-speed operation and reversing, and combines petrol and electric power for increased performance.

The system employs several other technologies to reduce fuel use. Energy from braking and deceleration is converted into electricity and sent to the battery. Electric power runs the water pump and power steering assist, eliminating drive belts.

There are three drive modes. EV Mode can allow drivers to operate the Prius c solely on electric power for 1-2km at speeds up to 40km/h - providing quiet driving conditions.

Normal Mode is ideal for everyday driving while Eco Mode can help achieve the best fuel economy. It reduces energy consumption by governing the throttle and electric air-conditioner.

Prius c also has a multi-information display (MID) with a range of features designed to encourage and facilitate fuel-efficient driving. Its menu, which allows the driver to monitor the hybrid system and even to calculate fuel savings, is viewed on a 3.5-inch TFT (thin film transistor) screen in the middle of the driver information area.

Hybrid models

For years, the iconic Prius name has been synonymous with hybrid. Today, the Prius range includes the original Prius hatch which is now in its third generation, the even larger and roomier seven-seat Prius v and the Prius c city car. Toyota also offers hybrid versions of its best-selling Camry range.

Globally, Toyota has sold more than seven million hybrid vehicles, of which more than 70,000 have been sold in Australia.

Prius C Safety

Both Prius c model grades are equipped with reversing camera, seven airbags, vehicle stability and traction control, anti-skid brakes, hill-start assist control and cruise control.

An emergency brake signal has been introduced to warn other drivers of potential danger by automatically flashing the hazard lights.

Touch Tracer Display, originally seen in the Prius, uses two sensors on the steering-wheel hub to display a duplicate image on the instrument panel, directly in the driver's line of sight. It helps to reduce driver eye movement for better concentration on the road when operating the audio system, air-conditioning temperature and recirculation, and Multi Information Display.

Prius c attracts the maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating.

Prius C Equipped for Value

The Prius c audio system is based around a 6.1-inch touch-screen display and includes Bluetooth® audio streaming and phone connectivity and USB port with iPod® connectivity (suitable device/s required).

Other standard equipment includes smart entry and start, an engine immobiliser, tilt and telescopic steering column adjustment, UV-cut glass, rear spoiler, 60/40 split-fold rear seat, external temperature read-out and clock.

High-grade Prius c i-Tech adds alloy wheels, auto-levelling LED headlamps with washers, privacy glass, premium steering wheel and upholstery, a larger rear spoiler and satellite navigation with live traffic updates (where available).

Prius c, like all new Toyota vehicles, is covered by Toyota Service Advantage. The capped price is $140 for each of up to six scheduled services in the first three years or 60,000km (conditions apply).
