Toyota are about to release their new rear-wheel drive sports car, the 86,
in Australia. This new model is a collaboration with Subaru.
With prices* beginning as low as $29,990*, there are bound to be many people excited by this new Toyota.
The Toyota 86 will be available in two trim levels, GT and GTS. Both models will have the choice of a manual or
automatic transmission.
Powered is provided by a newly developed 2.0-litre flat-four engine that revs freely to 7,450 rpm and has a high
compression ratio of 12.5:1. Maximum power of 147 kW and peak torque of 205 Nm will ensure brisk and engaging
performance.
Fuel economy is remarkable for a sports car - 7.8 litres/100 km for manual variants - and even better for automatic
versions at just 7.1 litres/100 km. CO2 emissions are 164 grammes/km (auto) and 181 grammes/km (manual). Figures are
based on the traditional combined cycle testing standards.
The Toyota-designed six-speed manual gearbox offers quick, precise shifting through closely stacked ratios and a
tactile "flick-of-the-wrist" short-throw lever. A new six-speed automatic transmission is optional. It features shift
paddles mounted on the steering wheel. Extremely fast shifting speed of only 0.2 seconds is a positive aspect of this new
transmission.
