16th April, 2006 Sales of Smart cars continued to grow faster than the industry average in the light car and small car segments last month, according to official VFACTS figures released earlier this month. The Smart Fortwo coupe continued its sales gains in March posting a 32 per cent improvement, compared to a 20 per cent increase for light cars generally. Sales of the Smart Fortwo are up 41 per cent so far this year compared to a 22.3 per cent increase in the light car segment. In the small car segment last month, the Smart Forfour boosted sales by 38 per cent, compared to two per cent for the segment. Year-to-date sales of the Smart Forfour are up 30 per cent over the previous year, compared to 1.2 per in the small car segment. Total Smart sales in March, which also included deliveries of the recently discontinued Smart roadster, were 10.9 per cent higher than last March. So far in 2006, total sales of Smart cars are up 12.9 per cent compared to the previous year. But with the Smart Forfour about to be discontinued, continuing growth for the Smart brand will not be easy as the brand contracts to a single model (the Fortwo).
