The Smart Fortwo ..... is that For Two or is it Fort Wo? The Editor continues to have difficulty in taking the tall and tiny Smart seriously. |
5th July, 2005 Smart is celebrating its second birthday in Australia, setting a new monthly sales record, growing sales volumes by more than 100 per cent and surpassing the 1,000 sales mark. Sales hit a new high in June with 75 customers taking delivery of a Smart car, beating the previous sales record set in January. The strong June result was 130 per cent higher than June 2004 and comes off the back of improved supply from the factory and increasing customer demand. On a year-to-date basis, Smart sales are tracking 78 per cent higher than last year. “Increasing customer demand, combined with the arrival of additional stock from Europe, was the key driver for our record June sales performance,” said Sam Tabart, senior manager responsible for Smart in Australia. “Judging from forward customer orders, July and August are also shaping up to be great months for Smart,” he said. Exactly 1,080 Smart cars have been delivered in Australia since the release of the brand mid-way through 2003. The Smart Fortwo has accounted for 642 units, followed by the Smart Roadster with 244 units and the Smart Forfour with 194 units. The Smart Forfour was released for sale at the end of last year. Australian sales of the Smart range of cars are above target for the year with the company aiming for 600 deliveries. In the first half of the year 346 Smart cars were delivered to customers in Australia.
