The manufacture of the most successful super car in
history came to an end on Saturday 6th May, 2006, when the
final Carrera GT rolled out of the Porsche production
facility in Leipzig, Germany.
Porsche’s V10 powered super car sold in unprecedented
numbers. More than 1,270 Carrera GTs were sold since
its introduction in late 2003, although the left-hand
drive only machine could not be driven on Australian
roads.
This figure represents a greater number than the total
production of the McLaren F1, Ferrari Enzo and Pagani
Zonda models combined.
Powered by a 5.7-litre naturally aspirated V10 engine
developing 450 kW at 8,000 rpm and 590 Nm, the exotic
roadster can sprint to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds on its
way to a top speed in excess of 300 km/h.
The Carrera GT is a storied member in a line of
limited edition super cars, a lineage born from Porsche’s
experience at the highest levels of world-class endurance
racing, although in this case the Carrera GT was a
street-only machine.
In its brief production run, and befitting its
ethereal performance, the award-winning Carrera GT was
named “Best Dream Car 2004” by Road & Track magazine, and
“Best Dream Machine” by the MotorWeek television programme
in 2005. “The Carrera GT is the best motivation to get rich
that we’ve ever driven,” said MotorWeek host John Davis.
The Carrera GT’s wide use of cutting-edge materials prompted
Popular Science magazine in 2003 to name the exotic machine the
“Best of What’s New” for its advanced technology and chassis
development.
Despite the other worldly performance, the Carrera GT is
still one of few super cars that can be driven every day.
