22nd June, 2006
The Porsche Boxster and Boxster S will be given more power and
torque for the 2007 model year.
The mid-engined roadsters will also offer even better road
performance and low fuel consumption; with the optional Tiptronic
S transmission and Sport Chrono Package also further improved.
Power for the 2.7-litre Boxster engine is up 4 kW to 180 kW and
torque is raised 3 Nm to 273 Nm, but with maximum torque now
available at a lower 4,600 rpm. Despite these slight gains to output,
average fuel consumption is reduced by 0.3 litres to 9.3 L/100 kms.
The Boxster accelerates to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds and has a top
speed of 258 km/h.
The Boxster S engine, meanwhile, increases in capacity from 3.2
to 3.4 litres, developing 217 kW at 6,250 rpm – 11 kW more than the
outgoing Boxster S – and 340 Nm of torque which represents a 20 Nm
gain.
This extra performance enables the Boxster S to sprint from 0
to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds – one-tenth of a second quicker than
the previous model. The open sports car’s top speed also improves to
272 km/h and average fuel consumption is 10.6 L/100 kms.
Both flat-six engines are now equipped with VarioCam Plus valve
control, with variable valve timing (VarioCam) and changeover valve
lift (Plus).
Inlet camshaft timing is adjusted by a vane-type actuator with a
range of 40 degrees. The valve lift changeover mechanism uses
two-position bucket-type tappets on the inlet side, actuated by an
electro-hydraulic valve.
The bucket-type tappets consist of one tappet inside another; the
two tappets can be locked together hydraulically by a pin. Thanks to
this technical device, the Boxster and Boxster S engines combine
strong pulling power with high peak output and low fuel
consumption.
The Boxster and Boxster S can be optioned with the revised
Tiptronic S transmission, which has new hydraulics and electronics
as well as variable shift programmes. When combined with the optional
Sport Chrono Package, the sporty characteristics of both these
mid-engine roadsters can be experienced even more intensely: up and
downshifts are made only at engine speeds above 3,000 rpm; downshifts
for engine braking are subject to less delay and take place at higher
engine speeds. In the manual-shift mode, up-shifts are not made
automatically when the engine reaches maximum revs.
Two new metallic exterior colours will be offered – Meteor grey
and Cobalt blue; while the stereo sound system on both Boxster variants
is upgraded to seven speakers and 230 Watt output.
Access for servicing on both Boxster models is also further improved:
the coolant and engine oil filler caps are now behind an easily
accessible flap, so that better use can be made of the rear boot.
Porsche’s latest open top pair go on sale in Australia from October
priced from $108,800 (RRP) for the Boxster and $134,600 (RRP) for the
Boxster S.
