Carrera Cup racing in Australia will shoot for a world record for the most number of brand new race cars of the same type ever to line up on a starting grid when 25 of the new 997-based Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars take to the track in Adelaide in March for round one of the 2006 Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup championship.

It is believed that never before has such a large number of brand new race cars of the same kind lined up for an internationally sanctioned race track event. The fleet of brand new Porsche racers arrived in Australia last week in preparation for their racing debut at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide from 23rd to 26th March – the first round of the eight round national championship.

The 25 racing machines, each costing $300,000, are the exclusive race cars for Australia’s fastest and most successful one-make championship.

“We believe that the first round of the 2006 Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup series will set a world record for the most numbers of race cars (25) of the same type ever to debut in the one race,” says Porsche Cars Australia managing director, Michael Winkler.

“This record would be worthy of being set in Australia as last year we had the largest field of Carrera Cup cars racing anywhere in the world.”

An application has been made to Guinness for verification of the World Record.

The new features of the 997-based Cup car will mean even faster and closer racing than ever before in the Australian series.

The new six-speed sequential gearbox in the 997 will make for faster gear shifts, while the ABS brakes are replaced in the new car by tandem racing master cylinders and an in-car brake bias adjustment control. This feature will enable racing drivers to brake later and gain maximum braking effect.

The revised front-end aerodynamics will further improve handling, and the full digital readout data logging dash (MOTEC) will assist drivers and engineers by providing more data.
