Le Mans 24 hour race: Qualifying: Three Porsche cars amongst the fastest five
15th June, 2007 | ||||
Convincing qualifying performance of the new Porsche 911 GT3 RSR: Three of the four customer-run GT race cars entered for the Le Mans 24 hour race qualified amongst the fastest five in the GT2 class. Porsche works driver Patrick Long was the fastest of the 911 pilots on the high-speed circuit at La Sarthe. The 25-year-old American turned the second fastest lap in the GT2 class with 4:04.622 minutes. Long shares the cockpit of the Imsa Performance run Porsche with factory driver Richard Lietz (Austria) and Raymond Narac (France.) “I'm very pleased with our time because we worked mainly for a good race set-up and didn't want to risk anything in qualifying,” said a thrilled Long. “The car handles very well especially in the rain,” added his team mate Richard Lietz, who tackles the 24 hours of Le Mans for the first time. Flying Lizard Motorsports qualified fourth in the GT2 class with drivers Jörg Bergmeister (Germany), Johannes van Overbeek (USA) and Seth Neiman (USA). Specially for the French long distance classic, airbrush artist Troy Lee gave the 470 hp 911 GT3 RSR a new paintwork. The fifth-quickest time in the GT2 class went to the GT3 RSR of Autorlando Sport. At the wheel of the Weissach-developed and built GT racer are Lars Erik Nielsen (Denmark), Allan Simonsen (Denmark) and Pierre Ehret (Germany). Seikel Motorsport finished the qualifying on twelfth place with Philip Collin (USA), Horst Felbermayr senior and Horst Felbermayr junior (both Austria) sharing driving duties. “Our customer teams have prepared themselves well for the bad weather conditions that have been predicted. All drivers are qualified. I expect an exciting fight for the GT2 class victory,” commented Porsche's head of motorsport Hartmut Kristen. The Le Mans 24 hour race starts on Saturday at 15.00 hours (CET). |
