Accolade for the Peugeot 407 |
29th December, 2004 The Peugeot 407 has been named the best medium car for 2004, by New Zealand Autocar magazine. High levels of active and passive safety proved a major factor in the Peugeot receiving the honour. In the latest Car of the Year awards - announced in the publication's January 2005 edition, the judges said the 407 was a worthy winner. "A larger car than the 406, which brings with it the usual weight penalty, it's also much safer, with a five-star Euro NCAP rating," said the Autocar team. Judges also said the 407 was strong in traditional areas, with "benchmark steering, chassis dynamics and ride comfort". The authoritative monthly automotive publication said after driving the 407 for 1,000 kilometres that it was even more convinced of the car's dynamic abilities. "The 407 is no mere lesson in front-drive chassis dynamics," said the judges. "The base car is loaded with kit, lots of it safety oriented, like ESP (electronic stability programme). Peugeot fits ESP to all 407s to utilise the high potential of the suspension and genuine driving pleasure while maintaining an impressive level of active safety. Developed in conjunction with the British TWR motor sport operation, the ESP includes an anti-lock ABS system, an anti-skid (ASR) acting on the engine management and brakes, and an emergency braking system. These all combine with integral control of braking on individual wheels to ensure the best possible efficiency and optimum stability of the car. The ESP on the new 407 also incorporates a stability control electronic unit, using sensors for the steering and yaw. This detects any tendency to under- or over-steer, further adding to the safety of the vehicle. "And for those wanting more grunt than the 2.2 litre provides, there's the six-speed auto 3.0 litre V6. Also available is a 2.0 litre turbo diesel and a double-glazed SW," said Autocar. The publication said that where the 406 was all grace, the 407 sports a rakish, aggressive stance, highlighted by its shark-attack air intake. Writers also praised the five-door 407 Touring for its versatility that allows various load/people/bike carrying combinations. With its aluminium double-wishbone suspension, the 407 Touring drives just like a car. Judges commended the 407 for its tactile steering, fine ride, strong performance and good quality interior. Road testers at the magazine liked the 407's good mix of dynamics, space, gear and comfort. |
