It was 1953 when Peugeot became a household name in this
country after a stunning victory in the very first Redex Trial.
Of course Peugeots had been on Australian roads since the early 1900s, but the Redex win really showed
what they were really made of.
Not only did Ken Tubman and John Marshall come home ahead of far bigger and more powerful cars, but
astoundingly their Peugeot 203 was in near 'mint condition'.
The event was “re-run” in 2003 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first Redex Trial and now in
2010 Peugeot Australia are doing it all again!
This year Peugeot is celebrating its 200th year as an industrial manufacturer. It was 1810 when the
brothers Peugeot set up shop in an old grain mill and began manufacturing saws, watch and clock mechanisms
as well as other steel-based items. Peugeot built its first automobile in 1889 and today remains the
world’s oldest existing motor car brand.
To coincide with the launch of Peugeot’s 3008 in Australia and the marque’s 200 year anniversary, "The
Peugeot 3008 Redex Tribute" will be a highly visible convoy as drivers in two new 3008s make their way
around the country.
Receptions and displays have been organised in towns and cities along the way at Peugeot dealerships,
and the public will have opportunities to view these events being held with a respectful nod to Peugeot
heritage and acknowledgement of Peugeot’s future direction.
The trek began from the original starting location at Driver Avenue, Moore Park. It was here that
50,000 people waved off the original Redex field in 1953, with a further 150,000 lining the Sydney
streets to see them head north on their arduous adventure. That first Redex reliability trial was run
over 6,500 miles in two weeks, from Sydney north to Townsville, across to Darwin, down to Port Augusta,
then back to Sydney via Adelaide and Melbourne.
"The Peugeot 3008 Redex Tribute" is schuduled for over 8,500 kms during a 15 day period. The 'Tribute'
began last Friday by heading north to Townsville, across to Tennant Creek, down to Alice Springs and
further to Adelaide, then back to Sydney via Melbourne to end on Friday 30th July.

The New Peugeot 3008
The new 3008 is Peugeot’s latest model and its advanced engineering and environmental responsibility
perfectly embody the brand’s philosophy for the future in this 200th anniversary year. An SUV of a
different kind, the Peugeot 3008 is a modern, high performance vehicle that is economical and
luxury car-like in its handling and refinement.
The two vehicles making the journey are XSE 1.6 litre HDi models featuring the 6-speed
electronically-controlled semi-automatic gearbox with Electronic Gearbox Control (EGC), delivering
maximum power of 80 kW at 4,000 rpm. This HDi engine with a capacity of 1,560 cm3, complete with diesel
particulate emission filter (FAP), is characterised by its liveliness and flexibility in use with a
maximum torque of 240 Nm from an engine speed of 1,750 rpm (or 260 Nm with overboost).
Built to an ambitious specification in terms of precision, robustness and compactness, the EGC is an
intelligent gearbox which ensures maximum driveability.
The EGC eliminates the need for a clutch pedal and is therefore an economical alternative to a
traditional automatic gearbox with its two modes: manual or automatic. This highly responsive gearbox
allows the driver to change gear at any time by actuating the paddles placed behind the steering wheel.
Able to change gear on its own, the EGC will meet the expectations of those who prefer stress-free
driving. In automated mode, the electronically-controlled gearbox maximises fuel economy compared to a
traditional manual gearbox thanks to its electronic management which chooses the optimum time to change
gear.
In the final analysis, this engine and transmission combination offers an excellent combination of
willing performance and low running costs. Its fuel consumption in the combined cycle is just 5.1
litres/100 km, while emitting 135 g/km of CO2.
The 8,500 kilometre event that is "The Peugeot 3008 Redex Tribute" will be a perfect celebration of
Peugeot’s impressive global and local history while showcasing the innovation and technology which will
take it into the future.
