A revitalised design for Nissan’s 2005 Patrol
Nissan’s legendary Patrol four-wheel drive wagon has received extensive internal
and external design upgrades, a new specification structure and new pricing for
the 2005 model year.
In addition, a revision to the popular 3.0-litre turbo diesel engine of the
Patrol has increased power by 3.4% to 118kW and torque by 7.3% to 380 Nm on
manual transmission models to improve on-road performance and off-road ability.
According to Shiro Nakamura, Senior Vice President and Head of Design for
Nissan Motor Company, “The Patrol is known throughout the world as a hard
working and authentic 4x4, but owners still expect a degree of comfort and
luxury. The new Patrol provides them with the best of both worlds.”
And true to the design blueprint, the 2005 Patrol delivers luxury, comfort
and genuine four-wheel drive capability in spades.
Central to the new-look 2005 Patrol are the extensive external changes that
go well beyond what’s expected of a conventional facelift. Every exterior panel,
bar the roof, has been changed on all seven-seat variants.
There’s a bold new face with Nissan’s trademark “four-wheel drive family”
grille, three-dimensional headlamps and revised front fender and bonnet. A new
look rear- end incorporates an integrated rear bumper and newly designed rear
license plate finisher. In profile, the prominent front and rear over-fenders,
integrated side steps and new 17-inch alloy wheels give the Patrol a whole new
look.
But perhaps the biggest changes can be found inside the vehicle. Although the
Patrol remains a tough off-road vehicle at heart, the 2005 Patrol has an all-new
interior featuring better quality materials, greater comfort and more equipment.
The principal interior change is a completely new dashboard assembly with
affords a more contemporary look and incorporates a new instrument panel,
shut-vents, and a centralised C-Cluster. The seats have been redesigned to
provide greater comfort and support and new Alcantara and leather trim are
available on selected models. A new centre console with higher armrest, new trim
and door handles contribute to the high levels of occupant comfort.
An all-new satellite navigation system with rear-facing camera has been
included in the top-of-the-line variant, and is available as an option on all
other seven-seat models.
Rear-seat passengers aren’t forgotten either, with redesigned seating and an
improved armrest cup-holder and handy flip-down table fitted to the rear of the
front seat on selected variants.
Nissan’s Patrol wagon line-up has received a new gradient structure, with the
five-seat DX and seven-seat ST, ST-S, ST-L and Ti variants making up the range.
DX and ST variants are powered by Nissan’s popular and now improved ZD30
3.0-litre turbo diesel engine, or the rugged and reliable TD42 4.2-litre
inter-cooled turbo diesel engine.
The ST-S and ST-L are available with the additional choice of Nissan’s
class-leading TB48 4.8-litre petrol engine, which generates an impressive 185kW
@ 4800 rpm and 420Nm of torque @ 3600 rpm. The luxurious Ti variant is available
with the V8 beating 4.8-litre engine only.
A five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission is available with
the ZD30 engine, the TD42 engine receives the five-speed manual transmission and
the TB48 engine is available with either a five-speed manual or a 5-speed
automatic transmission with manual shift mode on ST-S and ST-L models. The Ti
model receives the 5-speed auto with manual shift mode only.
And Nissan’s formidable reputation for four-wheel driving capability in even
the toughest conditions remains unchallenged, with the tried-and-true
combination of a part-time four-wheel drive system, coil-spring suspension with
front and rear stabilizer bars and impressive suspension stroke for greater
wheel articulation standard across the range.
The entry-level five-seat variant, the DX Patrol wagon, also receives a 2005
model year makeover with a modern new front bumper and extensive panel changes.
The DX retains its current choice of either split rims with 7.50R168PR tyres
(manual variants), spoked steel wheels with 235/80R16 tyres (automatic variants)
or optional 265/70R16 wide wheels on both manual and auto variants.
The comfortable and practical interior of the DX Patrol wagon receives new
cloth trim and maintains a high grade of passenger and driver appointments,
including air-conditioning, drivers airbag, central locking, power mirrors and
CD player as standard features.
The seven-seat ST variant comes standard with the new 275/65R17 wheels and
tyres, power windows, driver and passenger airbag, new moquette seat trim,
cruise control (TB48 and TD42 versions only), CD player, keyless entry and
colour coded bumpers.
Patrol’s new ST-S variant adds Alcantara seat trim, an ABS braking system and
the new seat-back table, while the ST-L model offers the additional comfort and
convenience of leather seat trim, power front seats and rear air-conditioning.
But for the driver who wants it all, Nissan’s top-of-the-line Ti is the
answer, with luxurious appointments rivalling far more expensive vehicles. A
satellite navigation system with rear camera, rear seat DVD system, in-dash
six-stacker CD with six speakers, power tilt/slide sunroof and side impact
airbags are all standard on Nissan’s prestigious four-wheel drive flagship.
The 2005 Patrol will be available in a range of fashionable colours,
including White, Platinum, Desert Gold, Burgundy and new colours Vintage Bronze,
Blue Slate and Black Obsidian.
Pricing for the 2005 Patrol ensures the vehicle continues to represent
excellent value in the Australian market, with numerous specifications added to
different variants, often at minimal – or no – increase to the recommended
retail price of the previous model.
For example, the TD42 ST variants now receive a passenger airbag at no
additional cost, while the TB48 ST-S variant receives passenger airbag and ABS
braking for the same price as the old model ST variant.
Paul Stead, director of sales and marketing at Nissan Australia, said the
new-look Patrol provided the perfect mix of luxury, refinement and real-world
driveability required by the modern four-wheel driver.

More than a facelift
A typical mid-term motor industry ‘facelift’
might see a new grille, different bumpers and perhaps some new lights at the
front and rear. And the new Patrol does, indeed, feature revisions to the
grille, bumpers and lights…but the comprehensive package of changes goes far
beyond that.
In fact, every panel except the roof is new and the changes don’t just bring
a fresh and contemporary style to the Patrol but also underline its tough
off-road heritage.
From the front, the revised bumper has a smoother, more integrated feel with
a separate vented centre section. As well as improving the looks, the centre
section permits a greater flow of cooling air to reach the engine, and is angled
to enhance the Patrol’s already excellent approach angle.
Sitting on top of the new bumper is a new grille. Styled to follow the latest
Nissan corporate ‘face’, it incorporates four angled struts on top of a
honeycomb mesh with the Nissan badge in the centre.
To either side of the grille are the new combination lamps, incorporating
side and headlights, plus direction indicators. Sitting behind a clear
plexiglass cover, the light assemblies have an architecturally engineered look
and are dominated by the horseshoe-shaped headlamp itself.
While many facelifts would stop here, changes to the Patrol continue with a
new bonnet and new front wings. The bonnet has a raised central section running
the full width of the new grille while the front wings each incorporate a
dramatic wheel arch blister or over fender on seven-seat variants.
A similarly bold blister can be found over the rear wheels, while the profile
view of the Patrol now incorporates an integrated side step to ease entry and
exit to and from the passenger compartment (not available on DX models). Other
visual changes include body coloured door handles and body coloured rain sills
on the roof.
Changes at the rear include a revised and fully integrated bumper assembly
and a redesigned number plate holder. The rear doors still open on a one
third/two thirds basis, a feature well liked by customers as it permits access
to the luggage compartment even when the vehicle is parked close to a wall or
another car.
With these exterior changes, the major dimensions of the vehicle have altered
slightly - the Patrol wagon is 5050mm long, 1940mm wide and 1855mm high.
Interior
Just because the Nissan Patrol is one of the toughest
four-wheel drives on the market doesn’t mean that customers should forgo any
degree of luxury. As a result, the 2005 Patrol features a luxurious interior
with better integration of the major and minor controls, more equipment and
higher quality materials.

The principal interior change is a completely new dashboard assembly with a
more contemporary look. Given a two-tone finish – a darker upper section
contrasts with the lighter lower half – all passenger facing surfaces now
incorporate soft-feel material to create a more luxurious cabin ambience.
Ahead of the driver lies a new four-dial instrument panel comprising
speedometer, tachometer plus fuel and engine temperature gauges. With classic
white lettering on black dials, information from the instruments is easily
assimilated at a glance. A touch of refinement comes from the neat chrome rings
around each dial and the chrome finish found on all interior door handles.
Even the dashboard-mounted fresh air vents have been improved both
aesthetically and functionally, in keeping with the more luxurious feel.
Interior comfort is enhanced in the 2005 Patrol by the addition of Alcantara
upholstery on ST-S models and full-leather trim on ST-L and Ti models.
A combination of interior surfaces is offered to allow customers a wide
choice of fabric colour and finishes.
Grey cloth, Jet Black Alcantara or leather with metallic trim is available on
ST, ST-S or ST-L models respectively, with Jet Black leather and wood grain trim
offered on Ti variants.
Desert Sand Alcantara or leather with metallic trim is offered on the ST-S
and ST-L variants respectively, while Desert Sand leather with wood grain trim
is offered on Ti models.
A new, sophisticated satellite navigation system, the screen of which is
fully integrated into the centre dashboard for ease of operation, is available
in combination with a rear-facing camera on the Ti model.
2005 Nissan Patrol retains its legendary reliability

Despite the addition of numerous interior appointments, the 2005 Patrol
remains as tough and as capable as ever. That’s because the chassis and 4x4
transmission systems have been left alone: it will still climb a 39-degree
gradient and wade through 700mm of water.
Beam axles front and rear allow excellent wheel articulation over the
roughest terrain, while the long suspension travel and generous ground clearance
all contribute to the Patrol’s rock climbing ability.
In everyday use on tarmac roads, the Patrol operates in two-wheel drive with
power going to the back wheels. At the first sign of conditions becoming tricky,
high ratio four-wheel drive can be selected on the move via a second
transmission lever on the centre console.
Essential 4x4 features are the automatic free running front hubs which reduce
rolling resistance when the vehicle is in two-wheel drive thereby reducing fuel
economy and wear, but which automatically lock in when four-wheel drive is
selected.
While the tried and tested 4.2-litre turbo diesel and 4.8-litre petrol
engines of the Patrol remain unchanged, the 3.0-litre turbo diesel, when mated
to the manual transmission, has received a handy increase of power and torque.
Changes to the injection pump design, a reduction of tolerance at the
injector nozzle, reduced engine friction and a change to the exhaust system to
minimise back pressure have all contributed to the improved performance of the
3.0-litre engine. The result is a modest 2kW rise in outright power, but a
substantial gain of 26 Nm of torque, taking the overall figures to 118kW and 380
Nm respectively. Peak torque is reached, as before, at 2,000 rpm, but the
improvement is noticeable all the way between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm – the typical
working zone of a modern turbo-diesel engine.
This greater torque will be especially appreciated off the beaten track where
flexibility and the smooth delivery of masses of pulling torque at low engine
speeds are vital ingredients for successful off-road driving.
