The 2016 Triton blends Triton’s traditional work truck durability and reliability with new, car-like attributes of ride comfort, nimble manoeuvrability, advanced pedestrian and occupant safety and cabin quietness and refinement. The 5-star ANCAP safety rated new-generation Triton features an all-new model range, extending from the tradie-friendly GLX line-up through to the sports-styled GLS and range-topping Exceed. Pricing* for the new range starts at $24,490*. Mitsubishi has developed its most comfortable and family-friendly light commercial yet, without diluting Triton’s core strengths of toughness and reliability. Passenger car comfort and quietness were prioritised in the new vehicle’s development and reflected in Triton’s comprehensive NVH package and plush new interior and seats. In a Triton first, cabin functionality is further improved with tilt and telescopic steering standard across the range, enabling drivers to find their optimum seating position. New Triton is also packed with technology features and introduces Hill Start Assist, Trailer Stability Assist, adjustable speed limiter, multi-information monitor and Emergency Stop Signal function to all models. Meanwhile, Mitsubishi’s new generation Super Select four-wheel drive II, HID headlights, LED Daytime Running Lamps, full colour touch screen, four-wheel drive selector dial, dual zone climate control air-conditioning and reversing camera are standard fitment on GLS and Exceed. Available in three different body styles, Double Cab, Club Cab and Single Cab, the new Triton retains a 3-metre wheelbase and class-leading 11.8 metre turning circle. This, coupled with a faster steering rack, ensures Triton can be manoeuvred with low steering effort, making it significantly more enjoyable and easy to drive, park and negotiate tight spaces than other light commercials. Mitsubishi’s iconic J Line feature is again employed across Triton Double Cab models. This clever packaging strategy enables class-leading manoeuvrability without compromise to cabin or load space. In fact, Triton’s interior length and shoulder room has been increased while maintaining Triton’s wheelbase and superior turning circle. The benefits of this mass-efficient design are nimble performance and better fuel economy, which is up to 20 per cent improved on some models. At the heart of the 2016 Triton is a responsive and refined new 2.4-litre MIVEC turbo diesel engine, which has more power and torque than the engine it replaces. Peak power is increased to 133kW at 3,500 rpm, while torque is boosted to 430Nm at 2,500 rpm across both manual and automatic transmission models. The new engine is matched to a new 6-speed manual transmission or optional 5-speed auto with Sport Mode. New Triton is a great vehicle for towing. It has an official maximum braked towing capacity of 3.1 tonne (4x4 Double Cab models) and has been specifically tested and tuned in Australia to offer better balanced towing performance. Triton also strikes a practical balance between towing capacity and vehicle payload so that even when towing at the maximum weight capacity, 2016 Triton retains a functional and usable payload. Mitsubishi Motors Australia Executive Director of Marketing Tony Principe said the 2016 Triton redefines the traditional ute concept in the Australian market. “Mitsubishi’s fifth-generation Triton has made significant advances in every area and represents a big leap forward in the light commercial segment,” he said. “New Triton is more refined and car-like, and still retains the trademark strength, durability and reliability that Triton has built its reputation on in Australia.” “The new Triton offers an impressive level of driver and passenger comfort across all models and boasts new engine technology that delivers more torque, more power and uses up to 20 per cent less fuel”. “With ride comfort and performance tuning developed specifically for the Australian market, and five star ANCAP safety rating, the new 2016 Triton is Mitsubishi’s best light commercial offering to date.” MMAL will offer a Triton GLX Single Cab 2WD with optional 94kW 2.4-litre 4-cylinder multi-point fuel injection petrol engine and five-speed manual transmission approximately six months after the May launch of 2016 Triton diesel models. The new Mitsubishi Triton is manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors Thailand (MMTh) at its Laem Chabang production facility. It will be sold in more than 150 markets across ASEAN, Oceania, Middle East, Europe, Africa and Latin America. Safety Safety is substantially boosted with all 2016 Triton models achieving a 5-star ANCAP safety rating. Triton’s exceptional safety performance is underpinned by Mitsubishi’s proven RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) body technology, which is used across all three cabin styles. Higher strength steels have been adopted in the key body structure to efficiently absorb impact from all directions and efficiently disperse it, while retaining the cabin integrity during a crash. Passive safety features including driver and front passenger SRS airbags, side and curtain airbags and driver’s knee airbag, while seat belts are fitted with pre-tensioners and force limiters. Active Stability and Traction Control or ASTC is standard across the 2016 range, along with Mitsubishi’s ESS Emergency Stop Signal function, which flashes the hazard warning lights under heavy braking to alert vehicles approaching from behind. All models are also fitted with brake override system, which uses sensors to recognise when both accelerator and brake pedals are being pressed at the same time and gives priority to the brake system to prevent accidental acceleration. A rear view camera is available across the range; as a standard feature on GLS and Exceed and an extra cost accessory on the GLX models. Triton achieves an acceptable rating for pedestrian protection with its energy absorption frontal impact structure, which extends from the front bumper, bonnet, cowl and immediate structures underneath. Powertrain The 2016 Triton range is powered by a new 2.4-litre MIVEC turbo diesel engine. It achieves 133kW of power at 3,500 rpm and 430Nm peak torque at 2,500 rpm. Using an all-aluminium cylinder block construction and other lightweight materials, the new EURO 5 compliant engine is lighter and considerably more efficient, more powerful and more refined than its predecessor. Fuel economy and emissions have been improved by lowering the compression ratio to 15.5:1 and locating the diesel particulate filter as close to the engine as possible. A 10 per cent reduction to the rotating inertia of the variable geometry turbo charger helps Triton generate torque at low rpm and provide smooth and responsive torque delivery right through the rev range. The engine is tuned to deliver 25 per cent extra torque at 1,500 rpm, which minimises the need for downshifting to maintain speed. Thanks to the engine’s MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing Electronic Control) technology, the powertrain generates a further lift in torque at 1,750 rpm, before reaching peak torque at 2,500 revs, delivering greater overall driveability. Not only that, Triton has an excellent torque to weight ratio of 4.5kg/NM – a key benefit of the new engine and efficient overall packaging. The engine’s torque delivery has also been tuned with Australian customers in mind, delivering greater responsiveness, faster torque delivery and significantly improved acceleration feel. The engine’s driveability offers a more pleasant driving experience as a result and adds to the quality of Triton’s towing performance. It also has the added benefit of great fuel economy. Triton comes with a new 6-speed manual transmission or optional 5-speed auto with Sport Mode, which is a new variant of the proven AISIN auto gearbox from the Pajero. Fuel Economy Great fuel economy is a significant benefit of Triton’s new diesel engine, new transmissions and mass efficient packaging. The 2016 Triton’s fuel economy is amongst the best in its class. Impressively, Mitsubishi has managed to achieve an incredible 11-21 per cent improvement across the range depending on model. The 2016 model uses traditional Triton sporty design characteristics, including the distinctive J-line to separate the cab and tub on Double Cab models, while adopting new styling lines flowing from the grille and headlamps to project a sense of strength, solidity and toughness. The grille has a bright chrome finish, while High Intensity Discharge headlamps and LED Daytime Running Lamps are fitted to GLS and Exceed to enhance the sportiness of Triton’s frontal design. From the side, Triton has a more unified look between the cabin and cargo bed. The surface composition uses strongly modulated lines to evoke a sporty appearance. Triton’s distinctive rear tail lights are designed to wrap around the sides of the tub and integrate the rear lamp and fog lamp. The rear bumper is shaped to unify the cab and tub structure while also providing step and protection functions. Triton’s overall design is highly aerodynamic, with a drag co-efficient of just 0.42, contributing to vehicle stability at higher speeds and lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. This is achieved by smoothly paring Triton’s front bumper corners and roof trailing edge, tapering the cab and tub towards the rear and the design of the almost stepless A-pillars. Interior Triton adopts a new car-like interior design theme that is both stylish and functional. It uses a symmetrical and integrated design that flows from the centre of the instrument panel through to the door trim and centre console to make a unified and modern interior space. The design is complemented by a black and grey two-tone colour scheme with piano black and chrome finishes on the centre console, shifter panel and door switches. Consideration has been given to the tactile quality of materials used in Triton’s interior for a significantly more upmarket feel throughout. Triton’s three-spoke steering wheel is finished with a plated three diamond Mitsubishi emblem in the centre and fitted with cruise and steering wheel audio controls for added convenience. New front and rear seats with increased cushioning are fitted to enhance both driver and passenger comfort. The front seats benefit from longer and wider backrests and seat cushions for improved under-thigh support, while side cushioning is boosted to provide better occupant support and positioning within the seat. Clever packaging has allowed designers to maximise Triton’s cabin comfort while maintaining wheelbase and overall exterior dimensions – a key contributor to the new model’s great handling and manoeuvrability. New Mitsubishi Triton offers occupants a comfortable and spacious cabin. Overall, Triton Double Cab interior length is up by 20mm with greater head and shoulder space in the front and more legroom in the back. Front seat rearward travel is extended by 14mm. When combined with Triton’s tilt and telescopic steering, which is standard fitment to all 2016 Triton models, the extra travel makes it easier to find the most comfortable driving position. Head clearance and shoulder room have increased compared to the previous generation Triton by repositioning the side glass, ensuring the cabin feels more spacious for occupants. Overall, head clearance is improved by 8mm and shoulder room is up by 10mm, while rear legroom has increased by 20mm. Rear seat comfort is further enhanced by Triton’s equal best-in-class rear seat angle of 25 degrees. Chassis The 2016 Triton chassis was developed with three key focus areas: ride, feel and balance. New Triton has been engineered to overcome the ride comfort and manoeuvrability issues normally associated with conventional light commercial vehicles. It retains the same wheelbase with the wheels moved further rearward. This configuration allows Triton to maintain a best in class approach angle of 30 degrees and dramatically improves its departure angle to 22 degrees. The main benefit is better weight distribution across all four wheels for improved dynamic response and feedback to the driving position. Mass distribution is also better under all load conditions. Mitsubishi has designed new Triton with extra reinforcement in the rear sub-frame to enable the tub to increase overall torsional strength and provide a solid base to attach the rear suspension. This allowed engineers to tune Triton’s rear suspension for maximum ride comfort. The 2016 Triton chassis is a development of the existing double wishbone front and leaf spring rear suspension chassis configuration, however, it has been significantly revised with new: Rear shock design Rear leaf spring – mounting position and length extended by 120mm Front droplink mounting Front and rear spring rates and shock rates Bigger front stabiliser bar Overall suspension tune The overall effect is better balance front to rear, better weight carrying capability and significantly improved compliance or car-like ride. Steering The new Triton retains a class-leading turning circle of 11.8 metres. Triton’s steering has been tuned for light steering effort and plenty of steering feel at all speeds. This, coupled with a quicker steering ratio and fewer turns lock-to-lock, makes Triton much easier to drive and manoeuvre, especially on narrow roads and in crowded urban environments. Point Plomer Road ..... more Four-Wheel Drive Capability Throughout its history, Triton has been recognised for its toughness, reliability and four-wheel drive capability, and the fifth generation Triton is no different. All Triton GLX models are equipped with the Easy Select 4WD system which is operated via the new four-wheel drive selector dial. Easy Select 4WD allows the driver to switch between two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive on the move. The system has three operating modes – 2H, 4H and 4L – and the driver can change between 2H and 4H at speeds under 100km/h. The 2016 Triton introduces lower gearing in the sub-transmission to improve its all-terrain performance in 4L mode. The new Triton has a best in class approach angle of 30 degrees and departure angle of 22 degrees. Meanwhile, GLS and Exceed models are fitted with Mitsubishi’s new generation Super Select 4WD II system, which offers four driving modes including locked 4WD mode. Key benefits include better fuel economy and quietness in 2WD mode and Triton’s 40/60 front/rear torque distribution in full time 4WD mode for superior cornering stability. Exceed also gains an electronic rear diff lock feature as standard. Towing The new generation Triton has an official braked towing capacity of 3,100 kg for both manual and automatic versions of 4x4 Double Cab models. This, coupled with a generous Gross Combination Mass rating of 5,885kg and low kerb mass, provides Triton with a practical, real world balance between towing capacity and vehicle payload. The Australian market presents a unique challenge for engineering towing requirements due to the vast range of towing situations and load types that need to be catered for. Typical towing requirements could range from a horse float, boat, caravan, camper trailer, construction equipment or standard two-wheel trailer, with each having unique load characteristics. It’s for this reason, much of new Triton’s development focus was directed toward the quality of its towing capability and performance, with much of Mitsubishi’s tow testing carried out on Australian soil. Key attributes of new Triton have contributed to the new model’s outstanding towing performance. These include: Engine torque characteristics Auto transmission calibration Manual transmission ratios Throttle calibration The transmission and throttle calibrations have been tuned to optimise the new engine’s torque delivery to provide strong, composed towing performance across a vast range of towing situations. Also complementing Triton’s towing performance is the new steering system, which enables Triton to handle challenging towing manoeuvres with ease. Trailer Stability Assist has been fitted to all models as a standard safety feature. This system, in combination with the new, well-balanced suspension set up, ensures Triton delivers a stable and secure tow vehicle package that’s suitable for towing a variety of loads. New Model Line-Up Mitsubishi Motors has revised the model line-up with the introduction of its fifth generation Triton range. The 2016 model line-up adopts the Mitsubishi Motors Australia’s naming convention already introduced on 15MY Pajero and 16MY Outlander. The Triton range now offers three specification levels – GLX, which targets the traditional LCV buyer looking for a traditional and high-value working vehicle, followed by the mid-range GLS and top-spec Exceed, which are equipped with more technology, luxury and convenience features.
