30th November, 2005
Mercedes-Benz Light Commercial vehicles today announced a limited edition of one
hundred Blue Arrow Vito vans, to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of
Mercedes-Benz van manufacturing.
The Blue Arrow is available in the Vito 115 Van and Crew Cab in both compact
and extra long variants and includes the following additional features at no
extra cost: distinctive ‘Jasper Blue’ metallic paint; 16” alloy wheels;
specialised Blue Arrow decals; electric and heated side mirrors; leather trim
for the steering wheel and gear shift lever; and comfort seats with armrests for
driver and front passenger.
“We are pleased to introduce the Limited Edition Blue Arrow Vito vans into
Australia, as the original Blue Arrow has a lot of sentimental history for
Mercedes-Benz."
“The colour and numerous added features are sure to be welcomed by our
customers, further individualising the Vito Blue Arrow Limited Edition,” said
Campbell York, senior executive, responsible for Mercedes-Benz Light Commercial
vehicles.
The Blue Arrow has remained an iconic vehicle in Mercedes-Benz history.
During the 1954/55 F1 season, the Blue Arrow, named after its distinctive blue
paintwork, was developed by the racing manager at the time, Alfred Neubauer, to
transport the world famous Mercedes-Benz ‘Silver Arrow’ Race cars between
Stuttgart and the race tracks in the shortest time possible. This allowed the
mechanics optimum time working on the cars.
The vehicle, which was equipped with an engine from the 300 SL “gull-wing”
model, ceased usage when Mercedes-Benz withdrew from Formula 1 at the end of the
1955 season after winning ten out of thirteen races and with two world
championships titles under its belt. After this there was no further use for the
racing car transporter, which at the time was only two years old. Since it was
too heavy to go on display in the Mercedes-Benz Museum, it was pressed into
service by the road testing department before eventually being scrapped in 1967.
In the early nineties, restorers decided that they wanted to resurrect the
Blue Arrow. This was no simple task, seven years and 6,000 working hours later, a
replica was built and was put to good use in a familiar role – transporting
race cars.
