The launch of the all-new Mazda 3 sedan and hatch almost 12 months ago has helped deliver Mazda Australia its best-ever sales performance with 55,560 retails in 2004.

Mazda 3 finished off the record-breaking year by producing its best monthly result to date (2,373 sales). In 2004 22,046 Mazda 3’s were sold, an increase of 5 per cent per cent over the superseded 323’s best result of 20,993 sales in 2003.

Other strong performers last year included the Mazda 2 with 5036 sales, more than 1,000 units above 2003. The Mazda 6 once again comfortably exceeded its sales targets with 12,075 sales. The RX-8, finished with 1,639 sales, easily outselling its closest rival. The B Series had an impressive year, with 5,706 sales, breaking all previous records.

The record-breaking performance gave Mazda 5.8 per cent market share according to VFACTS figures and 7.3 per cent share of the passenger car market.

Mazda Australia’s managing director, Doug Dickson, said: “The success of our latest Zoom-Zoom model, the Mazda 3 once again proves that the Mazda product recipe is one that satisfies the tastes of Australian car buyers.

“And this year we plan to add a little more spice to that recipe with the turbo charged, all-wheel-drive Mazda 6 MPS arriving about mid year and priced below $55,000.

“This exciting new model is not the only product introduction planned for this year, so we are confident that together with our industry-leading dealer network we can maintain our sales momentum and deliver as many as 60,000 sales in 2005”.

Mazda closed 2004 on a high, selling a record 4,480 vehicles in December (5.7 per cent market share), buoyed by better supply of the Mazda 3 and strong demand for the Mazda 2 (408 sales), which is priced from $15,990.

In 2005 Mazda expects the Australian new vehicle market to remain strong and is forecasting a record sales performance of at least 975,000 retails.
