16th November, 2007 | |||
Mazda Motor Corporation has announced that the Mazda 2 - known as the Mazda Demio in Japan - has been named the 2008 Automotive Researchers' and Journalists' Conference of Japan (RJC) Car of the Year. The Mazda 2 beat a highly fancied field that included the Honda Jazz not due in Australia until next year and the just launched Subaru Impreza. In fact, so dominant was the Mazda 2's win, it amassed an incredible 403 points, 127 points more than the second placed Jazz. The Mazda 2 becomes the fifth Mazda to win this prestigious Japanese award since its inception in 1991. The Mazda 2's mix of unmistakable styling, reasonable handling and competitive running costs won favour with the judges. The Mazda 2 received high marks from RJC for its fuel efficiency and drivability. The new model is around 100 kilogrammes lighter than the previous model, and has a range of engines more economical than the previous generation. About the RJC The Automotive Researchers' & Journalists' Conference of Japan, a non-profit organisation (NPO), was established in April 1990 to contribute to the robust development of Japan's automotive industry through open research and criticism. The RJC is comprised of researchers who study automotive engineering and automotive journalists. One of the organisation's activities is the annual selection of the RJC Car of the Year, Import Car of the Year, Technology of the Year and other awards. Models eligible for the 2008 RJC Car of the Year competition came from a field of 22 vehicles launched for sale in Japan between 1st November, 2006, and 31st October, 2007, with an annual production volume exceeding 5,000 units. |
