Today, the 30th April, 2008, the company that pioneered go-anywhere transport, that helped to open up Australia and the world, turned 60. It was in 1948 that Land Rover developed a new segment in the automotive industry when it introduced to the market to a totally new concept in motoring. In 1970 the Range Rover was launched into the market, again Land Rover were the innovators, combining versatility and capability with comfort and styling. The Range Rover has been called the most significant 4x4 vehicle ever, the first 4x4 to be equally capable on-road and off-road. During the 1940s and 50s over 800 Land Rovers were used to build the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme. This project cemented Land Rover's reputation in Australia for tough all-terrain 4x4s. Land Rover has never been stronger, record global sales in 2007, exciting new products, investment in future technology and financial security. In Australia, the brand's retail sales are up 80% for the first quarter over last year. Roger Jory, Land Rover Australia General Manager, "This is an enormously exciting period for Land Rover, not only are we setting record sales globally, and achieving strong growth locally, but we also celebrate our 60th anniversary. Land Rover is going from strength to strength repositioned as a premium niche brand through a product led transformation." The future for Land Rover has never looked so bright, with a new owner coming along soon and exciting new models to look forward to. The LRX Concept displayed at the Melbourne Motor Show is also a clear demonstration of Land Rover's commitment to sustainability, and a glimpse as to what Land Rover has installed for the future. On the brand's 60th anniversary, it opens a brand new chapter for the next 60 years. Sales To Date: 1,912,108 Land Rover Timeline
