Land Rover has accepted the prestigious BEST CARS "Best All Terrain
4WD" award for Discovery 3 Td V6 as announced at a ceremony held at the RACV in Melbourne.
The 'Australian Best Cars' award is one of the most exhaustive independent
tests in the world. With a strong consumer focus the comprehensive tests are
thorough, practical and objective. Complex testing over 20 criteria (4WD
categories only) was conducted in October 2005. Judges compare a range of
measurable elements including standard features, interior space, and
acceleration and braking, safety and security features, interior noise levels,
pricing, depreciation, running and repair costs and fuel consumption.
(Recreational and 4WD vehicles also undergo extensive off-road ability testing)
Already winning over 54 awards globally including 4WD of the Year in
Australia from Overlander, 4WD Monthly and 4x4 Australia magazines, the addition
of this accolade is outstanding news for Land Rover.
In a statement released by the national motoring association, they said:
"For the first time in years the best of British is good enough to be best
for Australians. Land Rover’s turbo-diesel powered, seven-seat Discovery 3 SE is
a rare find. It makes a mockery of its bulk with impressive cornering abilities, accurate
steering and dependable grip levels. The suppression of road and engine noise is another
highlight. This diesel shames many petrol power plants. A clever five-mode Terrain Response
system allows variations of Discovery’s
electronic controls, air suspension, gearbox characteristics and differential
settings accordingly. It enhances the vehicle’s considerable off-road strengths.
Performance from the 2.7-litre common rail diesel and its clever transmission
is commendable. It offers ample pulling power, prompt overtaking response and up
to 3500kg of braked towing capacity. The Brit’s fuel economy is good and its modern
engine sidesteps significant emissions penalties. The Discovery also soaks up bumps
with assurance and brakes with aplomb. In design terms it sets a cracking standard for
space and security. Seven adults can fill its theatre-type seats without compromises.
There also is plenty of safety, practicality and adjustability on offer."
Steve Morten, General Manager Land Rover Australia said in his acceptance speech;
"2005 really has been a wonderful year for the Land Rover brand here in
Australia launching to market two outstanding all-new products, the Range Rover
Sport and the multi award winning Discovery 3. Already Discovery 3 has received
over 54 awards globally, including 4WD of the year here in Australia from Overlander,
4WD Monthly and 4x4 Australia magazines. And we take these awards very seriously
particularly here in Australia where both the customer and the motoring industry
put our brand and our vehicles through their paces with rigorous testing and
fastidious assessment and evaluation. To be awarded the coveted 'Best Cars' award
for Discovery 3, really is the icing on the cake and we are both proud and
delighted to accept this accolade. Ernest to you and your judging team on behalf
of Land Rover I would like to thank you for your discerning choice in awarding
our Discovery 3 TdV6 Best Cars All Terrain 4WD of the Year. You have confirmed
what we at Land Rover know – Discovery 3 is a vehicle in a class of it own.
