Kia Wins The World Ice Championship |
7th February, 2005 Kia has won the Trophée Andros, the world's leading ice racing championship, for the second year running with Yvan Muller steering his Kia Rio to the driver's championship title with two rounds to spare and, with team mates Paul Bourin, Evens Stievenart and Wilfried Mérafina, giving Kia the manufacturers' title. Muller was up against some of Europe's top drivers, including multiple Formula One world champion, Alain Prost and teams from Toyota, Citroën, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Peugeot, Renault, Mini and Seat. The races are held at a series of tight, twisty tracks throughout the Alps at high altitude and made from snow and ice, where the conditions are highly demanding on both drivers and cars. The winning Kia Rio is no normal car. With a mid engined three litre V6 engine producing 260 kW, running through four differentials to guide power to four wheels in a car weighing just 950 kg, performance is, clearly, shattering on a dry surface, let alone the sheet ice race tracks used in this unique race series.
