4th March, 2013
Kia will bring the stylish pro_cee’d GT turbo to Australian later this
year.
The stunning three-door hatch makes its debut at this week's Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland.
“It is incredibly exciting news for us,” Kia Motors Australia Chief Operating Officer Tony Barlow said.
“This is a whole new level of performance for Kia Australia and the fact that it is wrapped in a sensational package
of style and safety is icing on the cake.”
Mr Barlow said it was too early to give a firm arrival date for the car or any indication of price, promising only
that it would be available in selected Australian dealerships as early as feasible.
“The pro_cee’d GT does not go on sale in Europe until the middle of the year, so we currently have no indication of
when our production may be available,” said Mr Barlow. “For the moment it is exciting enough to know we will get
the car and that when we do it will undergo the full ride and handling localisation.”
Powered by Kia’s high-technology 1.6-litre GDI engine boosted by a twin-scroll turbocharger and strengthened internal
components, the pro_cee’d GT puts out 150kW and 265Nm of torque - an increase in maximum power of 51 per cent over the
naturally aspirated model. The torque figure is an increase of 61 per cent over the stock 1.6 GDI.
The pro_cee’d GT will come standard with a six-speed manual gearbox and is capable of a 0-100 km/h sprint of 7.7
seconds and a top speed of 230 km/h.
The pro_cee’d GT was designed in Kia’s European studios under the direction of President and Chief Design Officer,
Peter Schreyer.
It will be built at the Zilina factory in Slovakia. Australia will be the first market outside Europe to take the
sleek street performer.
All-new Kia pro_cee’d on sale this month in Europe
Following its launch at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, the third bodystyle of the new Kia cee’d line-up – the three-door
pro_cee’d – will go on sale across Europe within weeks.
The new Kia pro_cee’d is a more sophisticated car, featuring all the improvements of the cee’d five-door, while
dramatically progressing the sporty appearance that made its predecessor so popular.
The new pro_cee’d will offer buyers the same range of engines, transmissions and running gear as the cee’d five-door
and cee’d Sportswagon. While the overall length (4,310 mm), width (1,780 mm) and wheelbase (2,650 mm) are also the same
as the five-door, the new pro_cee’d showcases significant styling changes as part of the transformation into the sporty
three-door body.
Compared to the cee’d five-door, the roofline of the new pro_cee’d is lowered by 40 mm, the B-pillar is moved back by
220 mm and the side panels behind the B-pillar are new, as are the side windows, C-pillar, tailgate, rear light clusters
and rear bumper.
“This car embodies emotion and energy through and through,” explained Peter Schreyer, President and Chief
Design Officer. “You know from a single glance that this is a car you want to drive, not just own. Kia is on a
distinctive design adventure and the all new pro_cee’d spearheads this forward-looking journey.”
To further distinguish the new pro_cee’d from its stablemates it will be offered in a range of six special
colours.
Depending on model, the exterior of pro_cee’d grabs the attention thanks to a unique dark chrome front grille, LED
daylight running lights and LED rear lamp clusters. Premium features available inside include leather seats and steering
wheel, piano black dashboard and centre console, and alloy pedals.
Among the options to maximise safety and convenience, new pro_cee’d also offers electric heated folding exterior
mirrors with puddle lamps, and a tyre pressure monitoring system.
“Since its introduction in 2007, the original Kia pro_cee’d has attracted more than 55,000 customers across Europe,
accounting for 12% of total cee’d sales,” commented Benny Oeyen, Vice-President Marketing and Product Planning, Kia
Motors Europe. “With the second-generation pro_cee’d looking even more sensational than the first, we expect to
significantly grow Kia sales in this niche of the popular C-segment.”
The new pro_cee’d will be joined in the middle of the year by the Kia pro_cee’d GT and cee’d GT, the brand’s most
performance-focused models so far.
Kia pro_cee’d GT and cee’d GT debuts in Geneva
The all-new high-performance Kia pro_cee’d GT and cee’d GT make their global debuts at the 83rd Salon International
de l’Automobile (Geneva Motor Show) in Switzerland this week. This new duo powers Kia into one of the most
high-profile market segments in Europe, and they are the brand’s most performance-focused production cars ever.
The two new models are powered by a new version of Kia’s 1.6-litre GDI (gasoline direct injection) engine equipped
with a twin-scroll turbocharger and strengthened internal components. Power and torque outputs are dramatically increased
(compared with the non-turbo engine), with maximum power up 51% to 150kW, and torque up 61% to 265 Nm.
Fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, the front-wheel drive models can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in
7.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 230 km/h. They can also accelerate from 60-100 km/h in fourth gear in 5.4 seconds,
80-120 kph in fifth gear in 7.3 seconds and 80-120 km/h in sixth gear in 8.8 seconds.
“The world premiere of Kia’s new pro_cee’d GT and cee’d GT highlights the diversity of our current product line-up
and underpins the natural expansion of the brand into the performance car market, an important step forward for Kia,”
comments Michael Cole, Chief Operating Officer, Kia Motors Europe.
“The new Kia pro_cee’d GT will have great appeal for motorists looking for style, performance and dynamism in their
next car – and the cee’d GT adds an extra level of practicality for buyers who prefer five doors.”
Designed in Europe under the direction of President and Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer, the Kia pro_cee’d GT and
cee’d GT feature new front grilles and lamp clusters, deeper bumpers, jewel-like four-point LED daytime running lights,
new fog lights, dual-exhaust pipes, larger 18-inch alloy wheels, eye-catching red brake callipers and a range of special
paint finishes.
Inside, the GT models are equipped with Recaro sports seats, alloy pedals, bespoke surface materials and seven-inch
racing car inspired TFT instrument cluster to provide an engaging, performance-oriented ambience for the driver and
passengers.
Significant developments to the suspension system ensure that the high performance credentials of these more powerful
models are matched by exceptional dynamic characteristics while retaining an outstanding ride quality, ensuring that both
GT models are well suited for everyday driving.
Production of the Kia pro_cee’d GT and cee’d GT is scheduled to start at Kia’s Zilina plant in Slovakia in mid-May
2013, with cars going on sale across Europe from mid-year.
