First-ever Four-door Wrangler Makes European Debut in Paris

26th September, 2006

2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

Featuring a one-of-a-kind, four-door open-air design, the all-new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited expands the Jeep experience to new dimensions. With room for five adult passengers – a Wrangler first – and the most cargo space ever offered in a Wrangler, the Wrangler Unlimited combines off-road capability with everyday practicality.

The all-new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, making its European debut at the “Mondial de l’Automobile” in Paris later this week, offers even more comfort, space, versatility and open-air options than the new Wrangler.

“Combining four-door convenience with Wrangler’s unique open-air design and unmatched off-road capability, the all-new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is the only four-door convertible on the market,” said George Murphy, Senior Vice President – Global Brand Marketing, Chrysler Group. “Wrangler Unlimited expands the Jeep experience and core values – freedom, adventure, mastery and authenticity – to a broader range of customers who have always wanted a Wrangler, but also more space and versatility.”

The all-new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited features a 2,946 mm wheelbase, achieved by adding 522 mm to the standard all-new Wrangler’s 2,424 mm wheelbase. The increased length allows for a larger rear seat that features three seating positions, as well as more hip room, legroom and shoulder room. In addition, Wrangler Unlimited offers twice the rear cargo space of the new two-door Jeep Wrangler.

Offered in four-wheel drive for markets outside North America, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited utilises the same five-link solid-axle suspension configuration as the standard Jeep Wrangler. The all-new Wrangler Unlimited also retains Wrangler’s coveted removable full-framed or half doors, exposed hinges, fold-down windscreen and innovative removable and convertible tops.

Outside North America, the all-new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited will be offered in three models – Wrangler Unlimited Sport, Sahara and Rubicon – and will feature dozens of different top, door and windscreen combinations. In addition, nine exterior colours and available 16-, 17- or 18-inch wheels will be offered.

The all-new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, built at Chrysler Group's Toledo South Assembly Plant in Toledo, Ohio (USA), will be available in both left- and right-hand drive, starting in the first half of 2007.

Even More Space, Comfort and Versatility
While maintaining its off-road capability, the all-new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited features room for five adult passengers and more cargo storage and seating configurations than ever before.

“No other vehicle in the world can replicate the all-new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited’s unique combination of best-in-class off-road capability, open-air fun and everyday convenience and versatility,” said Mike Donoughe, Vice President – Body-on-frame Product Team. “Whether it’s used as a daily driver or for extreme rock crawling, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has the ability to turn mountains into mole hills, while comfortably carrying passengers and storing gear.”

The all-new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited offers rear-seat passengers 94.5 cm of legroom. Rear seats split 60/40, and easily fold flat, providing more total storage volume than has ever been available in a Wrangler. A new underfloor storage area secures personal items out of sight.

Identical to the new Jeep Wrangler, the Wrangler Unlimited features an all-new instrument panel, centre stack and high-back front bucket seats. The front-seat area provides 13 cm more shoulder room and 11.7 cm more hip room compared to the previous Jeep Wrangler model.

Even More Open-air Fun for Even More Passengers
With dozens of different top, door and windscreen combinations, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited offers an all-new, three-piece modular hardtop – Jeep’s Freedom Top™ – featuring three removable panels for a variety of open-air driving configurations. The left- and right-front driver and passenger panels may be stored inside the vehicle, while the rear section can remain in place or be removed separately.

The all-new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited also features a standard Sunrider® soft top, which includes a “sun roof” feature as well as the full top-down option. This soft top provides a second open-air option by folding the soft top back over first- and second-row occupants, providing a 140x152 cm sun roof opening.

Even More Legendary Off-road Capability
Even with the extra 522 mm in wheelbase, the all-new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is the off-road leader in its class.

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited offers an available electronic-disconnecting front stabiliser bar – Active Sway Bar System (ASBS) – providing additional wheel articulation. The highly capable underpinnings of Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport and Sahara models include an enhanced Dana 30 front axle and heavy-duty Dana 44 rear axle, and the Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon model features enhanced heavy-duty Dana 44 front and rear axles.

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport and Sahara models outside North America include the second-generation Command-Trac® NV241, part-time, two-speed transfer case with a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio. In addition, an optional Trac-Lok® limited-slip rear differential provides extra torque and grip during low-traction situations.

The all-new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon model features an Off-Road Rock-Trac® NV241 two-speed transfer case with a 4.0:1 low-range gear ratio, as well as electric front- and rear-axle lockers and Active Sway Bar System.

Even More On-road Refinement
The all-new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited features even more of a refined on-road experience courtesy of its 2,946 mm wheelbase, all-new 100 per cent stiffer frame, 50 per cent stiffer body and refined five-link coil suspension. In addition, new steering and suspension geometry provide precise ride and handling characteristics, while new sound-deadening techniques reduce cabin noise by more than 20 per cent.

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited shock absorbers are tuned to match softer coil rates and achieve optimum balance between advanced on-road handling and rugged off-road capability. All Wrangler Unlimited models feature standard high-pressure monotube shocks, utilising Low Speed Tunable (LST) valve technology.

The Wrangler Unlimited’s recirculating-ball steering configuration features a cross-car steering linkage system, providing the stiffest possible steering linkage in a solid-axle vehicle.

Standard on the all-new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is an Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), which aids the driver in maintaining vehicle directional stability in severe driving manoeuvres on a variety of surfaces. ESP features three modes: “full on,” “full off” and “partial on.”

More Powerful and Fuel-efficient Engines
Available for the first time in a civilian model is a diesel engine for Jeep Wrangler, and this engine is also offered for the Wrangler Unlimited. Built by VM Motori, this all-new 2.8-litre common-rail turbo diesel engine is a 2,766 cc four-cylinder, in-line engine, with belt-driven double overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder.

The iron cylinder block is an open block design with a ladder frame bed plate and integral liners. The aluminium cylinder head features a side-entry swirl intake port and a directed intake port. A Bosch EDC 16 common-rail direct-injection fuel system is incorporated along with an electronically controlled EGR valve and variable geometry turbocharger.

The 2.8-litre diesel engine is available with a six-speed manual transmission or five-speed automatic transmission. Maximum power is estimated at 130 kW and peak torque is estimated at 410 Nm between 1,800-2,400 rpm.

A new 3.8-litre overhead valve V-6 petrol engine is standard on all Jeep Wrangler Unlimited models. With an estimated 153 kW and 325 Nm of torque, Wrangler Unlimited comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission or an available automatic transmission.

2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

The 3.8-litre petrol engine produces more horsepower and torque than its predecessor and maintains higher torque at speeds above 3,400 rpm, allowing for an expanded operating range. Fuel economy figures are also expected to be improved over the prior petrol engine.

The new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is expected to be released in Australia during the first few months of 2007.
