Jeep Patriot is the New Entry Point into the Jeep Brand
7th August, 2007 | |||||||||||
The Jeep brand continues its expansion into new territory as the Jeep Patriot arrives on the Australian market. This all-new compact SUV delivers value and 4x4 capability, as well as a new entry-level price point for the Jeep brand. “There's no second guessing that the Patriot is pure Jeep. After years of climbing the toughest trails, our Jeep customers don't want to leave the brand when looking at other segments, they want a vehicle the whole family can drive with ease and still call it a Jeep,” said Gerry Jenkins, Managing Director, Chrysler Group. A modern interpretation of traditional Jeep styling, the Jeep Patriot combines the packaging and interior flexibility of an SUV. Jeep Patriot features Freedom Drive I™, a full-time, active four-wheel-drive system with lock mode. Safety features, such as standard side-curtain air bags, Brake Traction Control, driver-controlled three-mode Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), Brake Assist, Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM) and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with off-road calibration add to Jeep Patriot’s tremendous value. “Safety features such as ESP, ABS and brake assist come standard on all new Jeep vehicles and the Patriot is no exception. It was important for us to introduce the Jeep Patriot into Australia at a competitive price without sacrificing important safety and comfort features,” said Jenkins. Gimmicks such as a removable/rechargeable flashlight, a centre arm rest designed to hold an MP3 player or mobile phone and an optional flip-down speaker system in the rear liftgate help set Jeep Patriot apart from the competition. Design The all-new Jeep Patriot is unmistakably Jeep, designed to appeal to compact SUV buyers who want classic Jeep styling and off-road capability. Jeep Patriot exudes the brand’s attributes of offering interior flexibility and utility. Jeep Patriot’s front end is classic Jeep, featuring the brand’s signature seven-slot grille, a clamshell hood, a robust bumper and round headlamps. Note the body colour fascia is integrated with the grille. A stiff windscreen and upright backlight combine to provide Patriot’s easily identifiable side view. A black roof moulding channels water over the Patriot’s roof and provides a smooth fit and finish. Patriot also features standard roof rails for carrying extra gear. The rails are black on Patriot Sport models and bright on Limited models. Jeep Patriot Limited models feature a body-colour bodyside moulding. Jeep Patriot’s high beltline completes the vehicle’s protective side profile. From the rear, the Jeep Patriot features an upright backlight and a bold bumper. Patriot’s modular tail lamps are tall for improved visibility. The Patriot name is inscribed in the rear fascia and complemented with a Jeep badge, which is located on the light bar in the centre of the vehicle. A black step pad with a non-skid surface. Four doors and a rear liftgate provide easy access to this compact SUV’s interior. Jeep Patriot rides on a 2,635 millimetre wheelbase with 1,520 millimetre wide track. The wheel placement enhances vehicle stability and ride quality. Large wheel openings accommodate 17-inch alloy wheels and all-season tyres housed inside signature Jeep trapezoidal wheel openings. Both Jeep Patriot models are available in Jeep Green Metallic Clear Coat, Light Khaki Metallic Clear Coat, Inferno Red Crystal Pearl Coat, Marine Blue Pearl Coat, Steel Blue Metallic Clear Coat, Bright Silver Metallic Clear Coat, Black Clear Coat and Stone White Clear Coat. Interior Form also follows function in Jeep Patriot’s spacious interior, which combines functional style, comfort and versatility in a roomy package. Jeep Patriot’s interior gives owners the capability to do more in terms of seating friends and storing gear. In addition, a command-of-the-road seating position gives Jeep Patriot drivers an added feeling of control. All Patriot models feature two two-toned interior colour selections, clever features in the instrument panel and centre console and the versatility of fold-flat rear seats. Flexible seating in the Jeep Patriot include a front passenger seat that folds forward to provide a table-like surface for versatility and makes way for storing gear such as skis or snowboards. Standard 60/40 fold-flat rear seats with a recline feature provide added flexibility and comfort. Folding the seatbacks forward provides a virtually flat load surface, maximising storage in the Jeep Patriot. Jeep Patriot has 1,000 millimetres of rear seat leg room, 1,357 litres of cargo space behind the front seats (up to the headliner) with the rear seats folded flat. The front passenger seat back also folds forward for longer cargo. Jeep Patriot’s instrument cluster area is large for a compact SUV and features four gauges. The Jeep Patriot Limited model features a painted silver bezel. Cluster gauges are black with white graphics and orange pointers and are illuminated by Light-emitting Diode (LED) lights. The instrument panel provides convenient storage compartments for added utility. The glove box door swings down to provide a single bin for storing the owner’s manual and other documents out of sight, while an open bin above the glove box provides additional easy-to-reach storage space. The centre stack, which features a Silver Alloy painted bezel to complement the instrument panel, the radio, climate controls, the switch bank for heated seats and the gear selector. These components are all within easy reach of the driver and passenger. A cubby for storing small items is located beneath the radio. Jeep Patriot Sport has standard cloth seats that feature a patterned insert with a solid bolster and back panel for a sporty look. 'YES Essentials' stain-resistant seat fabric is standard on the Jeep Patriot Sport. Leather-trimmed bucket seats are standard on Jeep Patriot Limited. The manual adjustable front bucket seats include adjustable head restraints. All models feature a two-tone interior colour theme of dark and light shades of Pastel Slate Grey or Pastel Pebble Beige. 'Franklin' grain is patterned on the instrument panel and lower trim. The upper trim is grained in 'Aura' to match the texture of the premium Aura headliner fabric. Powertrain Patriot features a standard 2.4-litre engine with dual Variable Valve Timing (VVT), which helps optimise the torque curve at all speeds. The engine produces more power, better fuel economy and a smoother, quieter operation than engines without dual VVT. The 2.4-litre engine provides 125 kW and 220 Nm of torque. Matched to a manual transmission, the engine also delivers fuel-economy of 8.9 L/100km (combined cycle). Jeep Patriot with the 2.4-litre petrol engine features a standard five-speed manual transaxle and an optional Continuously Variable Transaxle (CVT). This is a second-generation CVT that Chrysler Group engineers calibrated for smooth engine response and precise ratio control. The CVT contributes to a fuel economy improvement of 6–8 per cent compared with a traditional automatic transmission. A state-of-the-art, direct-injection 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine with high-pressure fuel injection, a variable geometry turbocharger and four valves per cylinder is optional in Jeep Patriot. The 103 kW turbo diesel engine, producing peak torque of 310 Nm, positions the Jeep Patriot competitively in its class for power and torque. This engine comes with a six-speed manual transmission. The engine also delivers competitive fuel-economy of 6.7 L/100km (combined cycle). Jeep 4x4 Capability Jeep Patriot Sport and Limited feature Freedom Drive I which is designed to give drivers year-round assurance, as well as the ability to handle rough weather and low-traction conditions. This active four-wheel-drive system is for daily use, including driving in snow and rain. Freedom Drive I features a lockable centre coupling, giving drivers the ability to handle snow, sand and other low-traction surfaces. An electronically controlled coupling (ECC), which is attached to the Patriot’s rear differential, is the heart of Jeep Patriot’s Freedom Drive I four-wheel-drive system. Patriot’s ECC system is more flexible, more precise and lighter than viscous-coupling or gerotor systems. The ECC transmits torque to the Patriot’s rear wheels through a two-stage clutch system. A control module calculates vehicle speed, turning radius and wheel slip and transfers torque based on these conditions. The unit interacts with the ESP, ABS and Brake Traction Control systems to ensure torque is transferred as needed, providing better handling and traction characteristics. Unlike other on-demand four-wheel-drive systems that rely on pumps or viscous fluids to transfer torque, the Jeep Patriot’s four-wheel-drive system requires no front-to-rear slippage for activation. Patriot’s electronic four-wheel-drive system anticipates the need for added traction and responds to wheel slippage by automatically transferring power to the rear wheels. The system contributes to Patriot’s fuel economy by operating only when needed, minimising power-robbing friction and inertia. To activate the Jeep Patriot’s Freedom Drive I Lock mode, the driver pulls up on the chrome T-handle. This lock mode ensures that the ECC sends the maximum amount of torque to the rear axle (up to 50 per cent) for improved traction. The Patriot responds rapidly to aggressive throttle input and delivers better traction performance for off-road manoeuvres than in the normal mode. At speeds less than 16 km/h, the maximum amount of torque is sent to the rear axle, which effectively locks the front and rear axles together at a 50/50 torque split for optimum traction performance. At speeds less than 40 km/h, the calibration for the ECC is more aggressive. At speeds above 40 km/h, the coupling delivers the same amount of torque to the rear axle as in the normal mode. Safety and Security Features The safety technologies available on the Patriot include driver and passenger front air bags, supplemental side-curtain air bags, ESP, Brake Traction Control System, Brake Assist System, ERM and ABS with off-road calibration. Optional on Limited models are front seat-mounted supplemental side air bags. The Jeep Patriot also offers a high level of security, including a removable/rechargeable interior flashlight, Sentry Key® Engine Immobiliser and a security alarm.
