Australia’s best-selling sports car – Hyundai’s unique three-door Veloster coupe-hatch – has been substantially
upgraded. Importantly, Veloster Series II also now offers a 7-speed double-clutch transmission on SR Turbo variants.
Veloster Series II brings outstanding new features, new looks, both inside and out, together with new exterior
colours, including a striking matt-blue finish. Veloster Series II’s now four-tier range also introduces a new entry
level, sub-$30,000 Veloster SR Turbo.
Veloster Series II’s performance-oriented ride, handling and steering have been further refined by Hyundai Motor
Company Australia’s local chassis development team.
The result is a better Veloster that also delivers even greater value.
Chassis and Steering
Veloster Series II introduces wider tyres (now 225/40 R18, up from 215/40 R18), significant spring and stabiliser bar
changes, and new Hydraulic Rebound Stops (HRS) in the front dampers.
Veloster Series II’s Australian-focused ride, handling and steering was fine-tuned after exhaustive testing by Hyundai
Motor Company Australia’s experienced chassis development team, led by the General Manager Product Engineering, Hee Loong
Wong, aka 'Wongy'. The tuning process evaluated over 49 separate suspension combinations of springs, sway bars and
bespoke built dampers.
The team’s systematic testing procedures – conducted both on-road and via extensive computer modelling – also
benefitted from recent experience gained during local chassis development of the VelosterRaptor concept and Elantra
Series II.
“The bigger tyres on Veloster Series II meant we needed to address the subtle increase in the car’s unsprung
weight,” Hee Loong Wong said.
“We reduced the front stabiliser bar diameter across the Veloster Series II range to allow for more independent
front-wheel movement. In the naturally aspirated Veloster and Veloster+, the bar was reduced from 24mm to 21mm. In
Veloster SR Turbo and SR Turbo+, it was reduced from 24mm to 22mm.”
“We were able to use a smaller-diameter stabiliser bar in the naturally aspirated Veloster and Veloster+ because
that engine is marginally lighter than the Turbo, with subsequent lower impact loads and reduced roll tendency.”
The lighter engine in the naturally aspirated Veloster and Veloster+ also enabled the chassis development team to
reduce the front spring rate from 2.6 to 2.5. The smaller front stabiliser bars also deliver greater initial roll
response for sharper turn-in and increased droop on the unladen inner inside front wheel, for better drive out of
corners.
In Veloster Series II SR Turbo and SR Turbo+ the team compensated for the resulting increase in mid-corner roll
caused by its smaller stabiliser bar by increasing the front spring rate from 2.6 to 2.7 and finessing the low-speed
damper characteristics. Additionally, this enhanced front agility – with sharper turn-in and more aggressive drive out of
corners – gives the car a more playful 'character', allowing the rear to be more actively involved during high-speed
cornering.
Rear spring rates and torsion beam specification were unchanged, although new dampers were specified to match Veloster
Series II’s new front-rear balance.
Importantly, Veloster Series II also switches from the previous Veloster’s 16-bit MDPS (Motor Driven Power Steering)
system to Hyundai’s latest-tech 32-bit system. Additionally, Veloster Series II SR Turbo+ also adopts Hyundai’s
driver-adjustable three-mode Flex Steer system.
“We’re extremely happy with the results and believe its retuned suspension together with the new MDPS system have
transformed Veloster Series II’s ride, handling and responsiveness,” Mr. Wong said. “Veloster Series I was good
but we believe Series II is even better.”

Suspension tuning facts:
- 49 separate suspension combinations evaluated
- 29 front dampers built and tested
- 30 rear dampers built and tested
- 2 front sway bars tested
- 2 front spring options tested
- 2 rear spring options tested
Exterior
Subtle but effective changes add even more to the Veloster’s uniquely dynamic appeal.
Veloster Series II’s Fluidic Sculpture styling has been enhanced via a distinctive grey grille surround (on both SR
Turbo variants) and new-style 18-inch alloy wheels.
Adding new sophistication and sportiness to Veloster Series II’s side profile, the new alloys are available in two
dynamic styles. Both are shod with sporty 225/40 R18 tyres.

Interior
Veloster Series II’s major upgrades further strengthen Veloster’s already-benchmark interior equipment list.
Standout new features include:
- Heated and ventilated front seats (SR Turbo+)
- New electroluminescent sports type instrument cluster (SR Turbo variants)
- Coloured seatbelts (SR Turbo and SR Turbo +, from April 2015 production)
- Colour-stitched steering wheels (SR Turbo variants)

Drivetrain
Veloster Series II is powered by Hyundai’s direct-injection 1.6-litre Gamma engine, in naturally aspirated or
turbocharged form. The Gamma engine boasts Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing, electronic throttle control, roller
timing chain, variable induction and innovative anti-friction coatings.
Power and torque figures for both engine types are unchanged. The naturally-aspirated engine offers 103kW at 6,300rpm
and 167Nm at 4,850rpm. In Veloster Series II, SR Turbo and SR Turbo+ power and torque are 150kW at 6,000rpm and 265Nm at
1,750-4,500rpm respectively.
Both naturally aspirated and turbocharged Veloster Series II variants are available with a sporty six-speed manual
gearbox. Naturally aspirated Veloster and Veloster+ variants also come with Hyundai’s six-speed double-clutch
transmission (DCT) with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
New for Veloster Series II and exclusive to the SR Turbo range is the addition of the smooth shifting 7-speed DCT,
also with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The all-new 7-speed DCT offers even sportier performance with quick
changes and improved fuel economy (now 7.1L/100km, down from 7.6L/100km).
