Design
Designed and engineered at the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Centre in Rüsselsheim, Germany, the i40 Sedan delivers a
mid-size sedan, offering European styling, coupled with exceptional interior space, quality and refinement.
Distinctly Hyundai and bearing the hallmark hexagonal front grille, i40 sedan is an interpretation of the signature
‘fluidic sculpture’ design language. Sleek and elegant with flowing lines and sharp creases combine to make a dynamic and
distinctive exterior.
The front of the Hyundai i40 Sedan incorporates LED daytime running lights making an instant impression and echoing the
‘eagle-eyes’ seen on the wagon version, the i40 Tourer. A unique sloping roof line provides a slanting profile drawing the
eye downwards to the three-strip LED tail lights accented with sporty chrome coated dual exhaust tail pipes to punctuate
the rear of the i40 sedan.
“The i40 sedan is a very new approach because it has this very fluid silhouette”, said Thomas Bürkle, Chief
Designer at Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Centre. “Its very aerodynamic design reminds me of a coupe, but it’s not an
aggressive design – it’s present but at the same time is very elegant.”
Bürkle continued, “The concave and convex surfaces create this nice play of light and shadow describing this vibrant
design; this lively design language from Hyundai.”
The i40 sedan maintains the same high levels of flair and refinement in the cabin. Every aspect of the interior has
been carefully considered to offer a pleasant experience.
High gloss back finishes combine with soft touch fabrics and alloy-effect fascia trim to provide a sophisticated and
modern interior. Blue lighting from the supervision instrument cluster provides a relaxed atmosphere, complimented with
conveniences such as one-touch (auto up and down) window controls for all windows and numerous stowage options as well as
a glove box cooling system (Elite and Premium models). Cargo area storage is 505-litres (VDA).
Available on the Premium model, a sophisticated one-touch powered three-piece panoramic sunroof operates with electric
tilt and slide function and mid-mounted 'cinema-curtain'.
Driving pleasure
With uncompromised versatility, the i40 sedan offers comfort for driver and passengers alike. Drivers enjoy height
adjustable seating with 10-way power settings with lumbar support (Elite & Premium models), while height adjustable
front active head restraints are standard across the range. Integrated Memory Seating (IMS) on the driver’s seat (Premium
models) allows two stored preferred seating positions to ensure perfect pre-programmed posture at all times.
Driving pleasure is further delivered via the fully integrated centre console featuring piano black high-gloss
finishes. Driver management systems, including audio, phone, trip computer, speed limiter and cruise control are operated
with steering wheel mounted finger-tip convenience. Twin paddle-shift automatic transmission controls, for enthusiasts
who enjoy sport-style manual gear selection, are standard.
The supervision instrument cluster, featuring electro-luminescent back-lighting, is not only aesthetically pleasing
but also easy to read. The unit provides a suite of vehicle statistics and trip information for the driver including trip
computer with instant and average fuel consumption, distance to empty, trip distance, average speed, and elapsed time
read-out. Hyundai’s ECO indicator system assists drivers to recognise efficient driving habits (manual models).
In-car entertainment and communications connectivity in the i40 sedan is state-of-the-art, delivering impressive
quality acoustics via the multimedia system which includes Bluetooth™ hands-free operation (telephone hands-free and
audio streaming), an MP3 capable CD player, USB/auxiliary inputs with full iPod® compatibility and AM/FM
radio. Elite and Premium models feature a high-grade audio system, incorporating four speakers, two tweeters and a woofer
plus a separate amplifier.
Elite and Premium models enjoy Hyundai’s integrated satellite navigation system, which is operated via the 7” colour
touch screen. This all-new state-of-the-art system offers features including SUNA live traffic updates, a comprehensive
Point of Interest (POI) database and Navteq™ maps.
The Navteq™ mapping offers guidance for over one million kilometres of roads and highways, as well as offering
hundreds of thousands of points of interest reference points including ATMs, petrol stations, restaurants, shops and
accommodation.
Key features of the system include: 7" full map colour display (2D/3D), touch screen, motorway junction views, lane
guidance, speed warnings, 3D landmark visuals, multi-route planning (fast, short, eco), easy access to “parking” location
function, traffic information through Traffic Message Channel (TMC), detour function and address input with intelligent
typewriter.
Perhaps the most effective feature for driver assistance is the SUNA live traffic update, which utilises on-line live
coverage of the planned route to notify on road incidents and delays. SUNA offers live alternative route options.
Designed to shield passengers from prying eyes, and to reduce cabin temperatures during summer months, the Elite and
Premium variants offer solar glass with a privacy tint applied from the B-pillar backwards. Rear console heating and
cooling ducts, and cabin air filtering systems ensure total passenger wellbeing, with dual zone climate control and auto
defog functions standard in Elite and Premium models. A panoramic glass sunroof is standard on the Premium model.
Performance
The i40 sedan offers a choice of petrol and diesel engines across all model variants. The new generation Hyundai
powertrains deliver outstanding fuel economy, good performance and low emissions.
Petrol variants are fitted with a 2.0-litre engine from Hyundai’s ‘Nu’ engine family. Featuring innovative
technologies such as Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI), Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT), a two-step
Variable Induction System (VIS) and an offset crankshaft and roller swing arms incorporating hydraulic lash adjusters.
Diesel variants are fitted with a 1.7-litre high output powerplant from Hyundai’s U-II engine family. Utilising Common
Rail Direct Injection (CRDi) technology and innovations such as a Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT), and an Exhaust Gas
Recirculation (EGR) cooler, the U-II engine offers low emissions, impressive torque and power outputs, and class-leading
fuel economy. The i40 sedan achieves best-in-class 'combined cycle' fuel economy of 4.7 L/100 km for the Active CRDi
turbo diesel manual variant^.
Hyundai is one of a group of car makers who design and manufacture their own transmissions. The i40 Sedan is available
with a six-speed manual (Active models) or six-speed automatic gearbox.
The six-speed manual transmission (Active models) includes multi-cone synchronisers (triple cone on 1st and 2nd gear)
and optimised control shaft detents delivering improved shift quality. Noise reduction has been achieved through the use
of gear tooth optimisation techniques and improved case rigidity. A hydraulic clutch ensures positive pedal feel.
The six-speed automatic transmission is characterised by smooth shifting and economy of operation. Life-long
transmission fluid reduces ownership costs; while the inclusion of steering wheel mounted finger-tip controlled paddle
shifters further improve the sporty feel of the vehicle, increasing driver involvement.

Ride and Handling
Extensive local tuning and specific calibration of the i40 sedan’s suspension and steering systems was carried out
over thousands of kilometres of differing road conditions, to meet the unique needs of Australian drivers.
The Hyundai i40 sedan features a MacPherson strut front suspension set-up which significantly reduces cornering lean
and enhances stability. A multi-link rear suspension system assists in providing outstanding ride and handling
characteristics.
The i40 sedan is fitted with Sachs Amplitude Selective Dampers (ASD) front and rear, which were optimised by Sachs
technicians whilst testing in Australia was undertaken. ASDs deliver a smoother more comfortable ride under cruising
conditions, whilst providing superior vehicle dynamics under demanding driving conditions.
Speed sensitive Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) is used on the i40 sedan, utilising an electric motor to enable
varying degrees of power assist for varied conditions. MDPS not only minimises weight and fuel consumption, but also
integrates with the Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system.

Advanced safety technology
The all-new i40 sedan achieves the maximum ANCAP 5-star safety rating, and comes standard with a comprehensive suite
of active safety technologies.
Active safety systems include; Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction
Control System (TCS), ABS with EBD & Brake Assist System (BAS), Cornering Brake Control (CBC) and Hill-start Assist
Control (HAC).
The VSM system integrally manages the active safety features (e.g. ESC, TCS, ABS and EBD) and Motor Driven Power
Steering (MDPS) system. VSM enhances directional stability by applying the active safety features as needed and by
providing counter steering assistance for the driver, helping the driver steer the vehicle in the correct direction. The
implementation of VSM can alleviate the loss of vehicle control which can be experienced whilst applying sudden braking
or rapid acceleration under asymmetric (wet/dry) road surface conditions, as well as sudden lane changes.
A number of standard safety features support the mechanical systems including automatic dusk sensing headlamps,
daytime running lights, static bending lights, emergency stop signal, and LED high-mount stop lamp, integrated LED side
repeater in mirrors, projector beam headlamps and speed limiter.
For parking with safety and ease, the i40 sedan is fitted with a reverse camera built into the boot lid in the Elite
and Premium models. Images from the camera are relayed into the integrated satellite navigation system’s 7” centre facia
mounted full-colour touch screen. Additional distance indicators projected on screen show the width of the vehicle and
distance to any objects behind. An electronic park brake is also standard across the range for precise hold and ease of
use.
Front and rear park assist systems, standard in all models, operate when parking or manoeuvring the vehicle in
confined spaces. Eight body-coloured sensors mounted on the front and rear bumpers enhance safety by sounding an audible
alarm and providing a visual indication on the dash when an obstacle is detected. The front and rear sensors may be
disabled via a switch in the centre console.
Across the range, a host of advanced passive safety features includes nine airbags as standard - driver and front
passenger, driver knee, driver and front passenger side (thorax), rear outboard side (thorax), and full length side
curtain - as well as anti-whiplash head restraints for the driver and front passenger.
The i40 sedan’s body utilises ultra-high tensile steel for supplementary safety. Multiple pedestrian safety features
(such as the impact absorbing bonnet structure and member-less front-end side module) are implemented to reduce the
chance of pedestrian injury in the case of a collision.
Colour and trim
The i40 sedan is available in three trim levels, Active, Elite and Premium; and eight exterior colours matched to a
black tone interior.
Exterior colours across the range include a stylish range of metallic and mica colours; Sleek Silver (metallic),
Titanium Silver (metallic), Stone Grey (metallic), Phantom Black (metallic) and Blue Spirit (Mica) plus Creamy White
(solid) available for the Active and Elite variants, and White Crystal (Mica) and Eco Beige (metallic) available for the
Premium model only.
