With its release earlier in the year, more style and substance is featured in the Elantra - Hyundai's ‘big small
car’.
The sporty, efficient and affordable Elantra Series II brings styling changes, new technology, even more engaging
driveability and important additions to its high equipment levels.
The Elantra Series II raises the styling stakes both inside and out. New exterior features include a chrome grille
and beltline moulding, foglights on all three variants, new-design 16-inch alloys on the mid-spec Elite and striking
new-design 17-inch alloys on the top-spec Premium. On the inside the Elantra Series II now features satellite navigation
and a rear-view camera as standard on Elite and Premium models.
The Premium also gets a significant styling and functional lift with the addition of HID projection-beam headlights
with surrounding LED positioning lights.
Importantly, the Elantra Series II incorporates significant new high-tech features to match its rakish styling. All
Series II variants get newly recalibrated local suspension tune and sharper steering response thanks to a faster
computer processor and the adoption of Hyundai’s Flex Steer system as used in the i30 and Santa Fe.
Like its uprated suspension, the Elantra Series II’s Flex Steer system – standard across the Elantra Series II range –
was calibrated in Australia for Australian conditions.
The combination of changes that make up Elantra Series II’s strong value-for-money appeal are boosted by Hyundai’s
capped-price servicing, comprehensive driver assistance package and market-leading five-year/unlimited km warranty.
In fact, Hyundai sales in the ultra-competitive small car segment, comprising Elantra and i30 combined, have already
given the brand market leadership in 2013.

Suspension and Steering
Thorough and detailed local suspension tuning and a switch from 16-bit to 32-bit computer processing for the Series
II’s MDPS (motor driven power steering) system, together with the adoption of Hyundai’s innovative Flex Steer system, are
major parts of the Elantra Series II’s dynamics story.
Again, the Australian-specific suspension set-up was orchestrated by Hyundai Australia’s Product Planning and
Engineering team.
“The challenge in tuning suspension systems to suit our conditions is to find the optimum compromise between ride
comfort and control,” says Hyundai Motor Company Australia’s Senior Manager Product Engineering, Hee Loong Wong.
“With the Elantra Series II, we believe we’ve done that while making the car more responsive to driver input and
even more fun to drive.”
Suspension tuning facts:
- 28 combinations comprehensively evaluated
- Testing included: circuit, urban, country highway, freeway, smooth dirt, rough dirt, gravel and corrugations
- 2 closed circuit high-speed evaluations
- 22 unique damper builds (11 front and 11 rear)
- 22mm stabiliser bar (down from 23mm) - allows sharper turn-in and reduces understeer, also provides better offset

The Flex Steer system (as featured on the i30 and Santa Fe) lets drivers choose their preferred steering mode –
Comfort, Normal, or Sport – based on preferences for steering feel and feedback in varied road conditions. Modes are
easily selectable via steering wheel-mounted buttons – perfect for couples with different steering preferences.
Exterior
All Elantra Series II variants share a new chrome grille – dark chrome on the top-spec Premium – and beltline
moulding, the latter helping to accentuate the dramatically upswept lines of the Elantra’s Fluidic Sculpture styling.
All three Series II variants are also now fitted with new front and rear bumper designs incorporating a new-design
headlamps and front foglights.
The mid-spec Elite now boasts handsome, 16-inch new-design 10-spoke alloy wheels, while the Elantra Series II flagship
Premium gets 17-inch 10-spoke alloys, the swirling new ‘twin-spoke’ design of which evokes forward movement even when the
car is stationary.
Also new to both the Elantra Series II Elite and Premium are electric folding side mirrors.
Interior
The entry-level Elantra Series II Active boasts an impressive list of standard equipment including:
- Stainless steel front door scuff plates (new feature)
- Rear parking sensors (new feature)
- Cloth door trim inserts (new feature)
- Glovebox cooling (new feature)
- Flex Steer with steering wheel-mounted controls (new feature)
- Cruise control
- 5-inch touchscreen audio system incorporating AM/FM tuner, single CD player, 4 speakers, tweeters, USB/AUX input, and
Bluetooth connectivity
- Power windows – driver’s window auto down
- Steering wheel audio controls
- Tilt and telescopic steering wheel adjustment
The mid-spec Elite variant adds the following (in addition to the Active’s long standard equipment list):
- Alloy look interior doorhandles (new feature)
- Electric folding side mirrors (new feature)
- Rear-view camera (new feature)
- 7-inch satellite navigation with SUNA live traffic subscription and three-year MapCare (new feature)
- Supervision instrument panel cluster with OLED centre display (new feature)
- Automatic dusk-sensing headlights
- Automatic rain-sensing wipers
- Driver’s window one-touch auto up/down function
The top-spec Premium variant adds the following (in addition to the Elite’s impressive equipment list):
- Projection-beam HID Xenon headlights with LED positioning lights (new feature)
- Rear console air vents (new feature)
- Sunroof – electric opening
- Electrically adjustable driver’s seat
- Leatherette upholstery
- Heated front seats
Under the Bonnet
The Elantra Series II retains Hyundai’s in-line four-cylinder ‘Nu’ engine with 16-valve DCVVT (Dual Continuously
Variable Valve Timing) and Multi-Point Fuel Injection (MPI).
Maximum power is 110kW @ 6,500rpm, with 178Nm of torque, matched to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic,
with electronic sequential manual mode, transmission. Combined fuel economy is 6.6L/100km (manual) and 7.1L/100km
(automatic).
As part of Hyundai’s ongoing NVH programme, the Elantra Series II also gets a new heat-, and noise-absorbing under
bonnet insulation.
Safety First
The Elantra Series II achieves a 5-star ANCAP safety rating.
On Elite and Premium variants, a rear-view camera displays its image in the 7” Satellite Navigation screen (no more
electrochromatic rear view mirror).
Standard safety features include: six airbags, Four-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force
Distribution (EBD), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), and Vehicle Stability Management
(VSM).
