Cloud Over Stormriders
17th January, 2007 | ||||
One of Australia’s favourite sources of motoring entertainment faces an uncertain
future. After 37 years, Holden has brought the curtain down on the thrilling Holden
Precision Driving Team. Since its formation in 1969, the team has made over 9,000 performances at a wide
range of shows and events across the nation, entertaining over 45 million people
in the process. “The whole team was shocked when we heard the news,” Paul Goodwin, lead driver
for the Holden Stormriders over the last five years, said. “I’ve been with the team for almost 10 years myself and it’s been pretty special
to be part of something that had such a great history." “The Sydney Royal Easter Show alone attracts over a million people and more than
half of them watch our performance, so hopefully it won’t be too long before some
new supporters are found.” Steps have been taken to ensure the popular squad remains in action, with Elite
Motorsport Group Pty Ltd purchasing the team’s infrastructure and equipment. “Holden has been involved with the team for 34 out of its 37 years,” EMG director
Scott Anderson explains. “In 2000 they let it slip away and it became the Hyundai Precision Driving Team
for 3-years, then in 2003 it became the Holden Stormriders again." “A lot of people were surprised that Holden has let it go again, but it’s opened
the door for other sponsors to get involved and we are already in discussions with
a number of other car companies." “We are confident that the team will be back on the road again soon.” |
