Holden has signalled its assault on the small car market with the preview of three super-smart European imports at the Melbourne Motor Show.

Due in showrooms in the second half of 2005, the stylish two-seat Tigra cabrio, three-door Astra SRi Turbo coupe and five-door Astra wagon headline the Holden show stand.

Holden Chairman and Managing Director Denny Mooney said Holden would become a force in the four-cylinder market in 2005 and beyond.

“Holden has had a traditional strength in large cars and that strength will continue. But Tigra, Astra SRi Turbo coupe and Astra wagon represent the start of a new age in Holden’s small car line-up,” Mr Mooney said.

“These cars will significantly boost Holden’s small car arsenal. They represent style, great value and performance, and will attract new buyers to the Holden brand”, Mr Mooney said.

“We are determined to build and expand Holden’s small car range by taking the best of the best from General Motors and bringing it to market right here in Australia.”

The head-turning Tigra two-door is a sporty and compact convertible which doubles as an ultra-stylish coupe. Winner of the ‘Cabrio of the Year 2004’ award at the Geneva Motor Show, the Tigra roadster has a retractable hard top and looks equally as good with the roof open or closed.

The Tigra is equipped with features including a 1.8 litre 16 valve engine, 16-inch alloy wheels*, cruise control and safety features including ABS and brake assist. The stylish roadster is expected to attract new buyers to the Holden brand.

Holden’s strong-selling Astra range gets even broader with the introduction of Astra SRi Turbo coupe and Astra CDX Wagon.

The three-door Astra SRi Turbo sports hatch coupe features a powerful 2.0 litre, 147 kW turbo engine, with 18-inch alloy wheels*, leather trim and advanced active safety technology.

Astra SRi Turbo will have plenty of appeal for performance enthusiasts and its leading-edge design cues will set it apart in its class.

The Astra coupe will also be available in CD and CDX models in the second half of 2005.

The new-to-Australia Astra wagon, a firm family favourite in Europe, will attract compact wagon buyers. It retains all of Astra sedan’s sleek and stylish design cues, supple ride and handling agility while offering increased carrying capacity and superb interior packaging.

Astra CDX wagon features include a 1.8 litre 16 valve engine, 16-inch alloy wheels*, ABS, driver, passenger and front side impact airbags, cruise control and trip computer.

Astra wagon will also be available in a CD model in the second half of 2005.
