Holden is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the original Holden ute with a documentary about the passion and pride associated with the famous Aussie 'workhorse'.

Ute-opia is a four-part series produced by the National Motor Museum in Adelaide and directed by film maker Ash Starkey. It gives a behind-the-scenes look at the daily lives of Holden ute enthusiasts and their vehicles ranging from its early days as a tool of trade to those treated as a two-door sporty car with a practical edge.

Holden Executive Director of Corporate Affairs, Samantha Read said the documentary conveys Australia’s enjoyment with the Holden ute that has seen it earn a proud place in the national conscience from the moment it hit our roads back in 1951.

“The Holden ute is an iconic part of the Australian motoring story and Ute-opia is a fitting way to celebrate the public affection that has developed for this unique vehicle over sixty years,” Ms Read said.

“The response we had from people wanting to share their own Holden ute memories for this documentary was quite overwhelming and demonstrates how the ute has touched our lives in one way or another for decades.”

“Those that were chosen to tell their story show just how much the ute has evolved. There are those that continue to use it as tradesmen’s transport, while others see it as a real lifestyle vehicle. It certainly has come a long way.”

Developed over 12 months, Ute-opia is on show at the National Motor Museum in the Adelaide Hills, and fittingly is shown on a purpose-built display unit that includes an LCD screen fitted into the cargo tray of a current Series II Holden ute.

It will be on show until the end of September before hitting the road for display at car club events and Holden dealers around the country.

A treasured automotive icon, today's ute is all about working hard and playing hard. Holden’s VE Series II ute range caters for owners that enjoy an active lifestyle, from the work-horse Omega model through to the hero, the SS-V series Redline edition complete with 19-inch polished forged alloy wheels and all supported with a range of customised Holden accessories.
