17th August, 2006 Milestone GM vehicles from every era, including the future, will be on display and on the road Saturday, 19th August, at America's 2006 Woodward Dream Cruise – the world’s largest one-day classic car show. More than 40 of the company’s treasures, representing Cadillac, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Pontiac and Saab brands will be displayed at the Athens Coney Island and the Birmingham ‘Triangle’. There they will be joined by cars of today and one very special car of tomorrow - the spectacular Camaro Concept that has captured the hearts and minds of enthusiasts. The Athens Coney, located on the west side of Woodward south of 14 Mile road, will feature 24 automotive icons including; a 1931 16-cylinder dual-windshield Cadillac touring car, a 1969 Pontiac GTO Judge, the 1959 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray Racer, the turbine-powered Firebird I concept car and a 1956 Saab Sonett SS.
There will also be a replica of the 1954 Cadillac Series 62 coupe that finished third in class at the 1954 La Carrera Panamericana Mexican road race. Recently restored by GM Performance Division, the ’54 Cadillac will be driven this November in the 2006 version of the race. Extending the theme of ‘GM Powered’, General Motors Powertrain will be displaying both vintage powerplants plus the latest in engine technologies, including the direct injection, turbocharged, 2-litre Ecotec engine that produces more than 2.1 hp per cubic inch while delivering remarkable fuel economy in the 2007 Saturn Sky Redline and Pontiac Solstice GXP. A “sneak preview” of GM vehicles and exhibits at the Athens Coney Island will be open to the public Friday beginning at 6:30 PM. Exciting Chevrolets, old and new, will dominate the Birmingham ‘Triangle’, located where Old and New Woodward meet. Classic Chevrolets will share space with a special Chevy ‘Tuner’ exhibit and vehicles engineered by GM’s Performance Division. The brightest star of this year’s Dream Cruise will also be shining at the Triangle. Named the Best Concept at this year’s North American International Auto Show (Detroit Motor Show), the Camaro Concept moves closer to its roots when it rolls down the 16-mile stretch of asphalt and concrete known as Woodward Avenue, the place where street credibility for muscle cars has been earned since the ‘60’s. Yesterday. Today. Tomorrow. General Motors is participating in the Woodward Dream Cruise the only way it knows how, with an eye to past success leading to its vision for the future.
