Europe's New Fords
26th February, 2007 | ||||
Ford of Europe is launching two significant new models at the 2007 Geneva Motor
Show, which is open to the public between 6th and 18th March, 2007. The dramatic,
all-new Mondeo, Ford of Europe's most technologically-advanced car ever and the
redesigned C-MAX will take centre stage on the Ford stand in Geneva. These major new models come on the heels of Ford of Europe's
solid business and award-winning product performance in 2006 a year in which
the new Ford S-MAX was awarded 'Car of the Year' for 2007, the latest Ford
Transit was named 'International Van of the Year 2007' and the BP Ford World
Rally team scooped the Manufacturers' Trophy for the 2006 FIA World Rally
Championship. "2007 will be an equally exciting year for Ford of Europe, as
the dynamic, all-new Mondeo, plus the redesigned C-MAX will add real strength to
our expanding portfolio," said John Fleming, President and CEO, Ford of Europe.
"The new Mondeo is particularly important to us and it's the most
technologically-advanced car we've ever launched. I am convinced that, like Ford
S-MAX, Car of the Year 2007, the new Mondeo will not only bring new buyers to
Ford showrooms but also delight our loyal customer base across Europe." The All-New Ford Mondeo Mondeo Transformed The dramatic and distinctive new Ford Mondeo epitomises Ford's 'kinetic design' styling language and introduces many new technical features to the Ford range. Mondeo's established strengths have been built on, notably with improved driving dynamics and safety enhancements.
Three individual Mondeo bodystyles, each embodying Ford of Europe's dynamic 'kinetic design' form language, will be launched simultaneously across Europe from (northern) summer 2007. The new range offers a broad choice of trim series and a wide range of powertrains and brings new levels of refinement and comfort to its class and to the Ford of Europe portfolio. "The Ford Mondeo has always been acclaimed for its strong attributes, particularly its driving dynamics and safety performance," said Steve Adams, Vehicle Line Director, Large & Luxury Cars, Ford of Europe. "With this remarkable new model we've taken these qualities a step further and enhanced the performance of the car in almost all aspects as well as transforming its design and quality." The new Ford Mondeo benefits from Ford Motor Company's Global Shared Technologies initiative, sharing many elements of its core architecture with the Ford S-MAX Car of the Year 2007 and the new generation Ford Galaxy. New Mondeo, however, is an individual model in its own right. Mondeo Choice Three distinct bodystyles a classic four-door sedan, a stylish and flexible five-door hatchback and the capacious wagon will be available simultaneously from launch. For each bodystyle, four distinct series are available: the Ambiente, which provides a high level of standard equipment essential for business and family needs, the contemporary Trend series, and, at the top of the range, the Titanium and Ghia models. The range-topping Titanium and Ghia models offer a choice of premium quality details. While the Ghia model represents 'classic luxury' with extensive use of chrome and wood ornamentation inside, the Titanium model will appeal to those customers favouring a more contemporary 'techno' flavour, with its metal-finish interior elements, standard Ford Convers+ HMI system and blue glass. An X-pack option will also be available for the Titanium and Ghia series, while a Sport pack can be specified for Trend and Titanium models, featuring lower suspension, partial leather seats and a choice of 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels. Indvidual market series specifications will be released closer to launch. New Mondeo Exterior Design The new Mondeo brings Ford's 'kinetic design' form language and philosophy to new levels, embodying all of its key elements. Together, these provide a sleek and dynamic profile that represents 'energy in motion' and delivers a design presence that signals power and grace, setting it apart from run-of-the mill cars. Immediately obvious when seen from the front is the new Mondeo's distinctive 'face', which is characterised by its trapezoid-shaped lower grille; a 'kinetic design' element that is increasingly recognised as part of the new Ford identity and is already evident on several recent Ford models, including the S-MAX and the redesigned Ford C-MAX. A high bonnet line adds to the muscular proportions of all three bodystyles and ensures that new Mondeo meets the latest pedestrian safety requirements. The bonnet includes two shaped grooves in the surface which, in effect, provide a 'power bulge', hinting at the dynamic qualities of the car. Viewed from above, Mondeo's front three-plane-plan view is immediately evident, providing a clear link between the production vehicle and the definitive expression of 'kinetic design' the iosis concept car first revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2005. The stylish and flexible five-door hatchback, classic four-door sedan and spacious wagon each feature a strong silhouette with the A-pillar angle perfectly blending through to the different bodystyles. The raised shoulder line gives a muscular feel to the car and improves the visual stance. Another Ford exterior design signature is the use of pronounced wheel 'lips' or arches. This design element signifies the strong driving dynamics the Ford brand represents. For the first time on the new Mondeo, Ford of Europe is utilising an innovative manufacturing technique known as 'laser-brazing'. This provides a way of joining the side and roof panels together in a more aesthetically pleasing way. A higher quality finish is achieved as there is no need for plastic or rubber trims running the length of the roof to cover the area where the panels would conventionally meet. All bodystyles feature two-piece rear lamps with honeycomb-shaped filters and a body-coloured panel at the rear, covering the entire width of the lower portion of the tailgate or bootlid. Testing has proved this to be successful as a cost-effective and relatively simple-to-repair solution in the event of damage. For the first time on Mondeo, blue glass is fitted as standard on the Titanium and Titanium X models in support of the 'modern techno' contemporary look for this series. Blue glass distinguishes these models from the rest of the range which uses green tinted glass. All Mondeos will be available with a special infra-red (IR) front screen. This provides a cooling effect to the interior in comparison to non-infra-red glass. Tests show that the reflected energy performance of the IR glass is up to four times better when compared to standard glass. New Mondeo Interior In order to optimise the interior package and visibility, Ford's engineers developed and first used on Mondeo a new Computer Aided Virtual Engineering (CAVE) system. CAVE uses a combination of computers and projectors to provide a virtual life-sized interior of a car. Using a specially designed rig, a real car seat is fixed into the appropriate position for the 'driver' who can then evaluate all-round visibility as well as comfort levels for reaching the steering wheel and operating major controls. New Mondeo benefits from wide door opening angles to facilitate easy entrance and exit for passengers. Once inside, drivers will find themselves in a spacious and dynamic cabin. The driver will enjoy the 'cockpit' driving position as the higher beltline and flow-through centre console combine to enhance the cosseted feeling for front seat occupants. Front seat legroom and shoulder room have been increased by 24 mm and 52 mm respectively. New levels of craftsmanship are evident throughout the new Mondeo. For example, careful use of 'piano black' interior styling accents adds to the ensemble and provides additional interest and a tactile feel to key touch areas. Soft-touch material is used extensively throughout the cabin to emphasise the quality and refinement of the interior and helps to absorb any squeaks and rattles from items placed in the numerous smaller stowage areas. On Ghia and Titanium models, a new woven headlining is used which extends down the A-pillars. New interior lighting enhancements include the use of 'ambient lighting' on all models to provide a warm amber illumination to the centre console. Additional clear lighting adds a soft glow to the front footwell areas to provide better visibility when getting into and out of the car. New design seats include an available 8-way power adjustable sport seat for the driver that provides separate adjustments for fore/aft, seating height, cushion angle and backrest recline. 8-way power adjustment is standard equipment on the Ghia X model and optional on all other series with the exception of Ambiente which has two-way manual adjustment complete with lumbar control. The 8-way power adjustable driver's seat can be specified with an optional memory function. Memory buttons enable up to four different seating positions to be stored and recalled or to return to the 'last-used' position through the use of any remote key that corresponds to the car. The memory function also applies to both door mirrors. As each stored seat position is recalled the door mirrors return to their corresponding position. The seat and mirror memory positions are programmed to be recalled only when the car is stationary. Also for the first time, new Mondeo Ghia and Titanium models are fitted with additional B-pillar ventilation openings which improve interior comfort and increase demisting performance. Air conditioning is standard equipment on all new Mondeo models, and for maximum interior climate control, Dual Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (DEATC) is available. The DEATC system features individual temperature controls for the driver and front passenger. A 12 volt powerpoint, positioned at the rear of the flow-through centre console, allows rear passengers to use or charge additional electrical devices whilst on the move. Second row passengers also benefit from optional seat heating elements and dedicated reading lamps that are standard on high-series models. New Mondeo Versatility In two-seat mode the wagon and five-door models offer substantial luggage capacities of 1,745 litres and 1,460 litres respectively. The closed luggage area of the four-door has a generous capacity of 535 litres. Those models equipped with a Continental Comfort Kit for tyre inflation also gain an additional 15 litres of capacity within the spare wheel well.
Tie-down points and hooks are provided in the luggage area of each bodystyle and an optional third 12 volt powerpoint is incorporated within the luggage compartment of the wagon to charge electrical devices. Large pockets run the full length of the front doors and can comfortably hold a 1.5 litre drinks bottle. The glove box has been enlarged by approximately 10 per cent and can easily carry drinks cans. The 'aux in' socket for connection of portable audio devices is also conveniently located in the glove box. The deep centre armrest and the area adjacent to the steering wheel provide additional stowage areas for small items within easy reach of the driver. New Technologies for Driver Assistance New Generation Ford Human Machine Interface The new HMI system brings vehicle interaction and systems control to a new level. The system features three main components: Toggle Switches: Two toggle switches are prominently placed on the steering wheel. The right toggle switch uses a geometrical representation system with a well-known hierarchical structure; in its simplest form this translates to up, down, left and right. Each selection is confirmed by pressing 'OK' in the centre of the toggle switch. The left toggle switch has up and down movement to control the volume and seek functions when in audio mode. Multimedia Unit: A new colour and configurable multimedia display unit is integrated into the flow-through centre console. This unit enables passengers to control the radio, navigation system, mobile phone, CD changer and audio devices connected through the auxiliary socket. Instrument Cluster Display: All new Mondeo models are provided with one of three levels of HMI depending on series and features. Situated in the centre of the instrument cluster the HMI display screen gives concise and clear information in the driver's field of vision. The Standard and Enhanced clusters use a negative monochrome display with red illumination, while a new 15 cm Ford Convers+ full-colour premium cluster display is also available. The new Ford Convers+ system, which may be specified as an option on Trend, Ghia and Ghia X models, comes as standard equipment on the modern techno Titanium and Titanium X series. It features a 15 cm colour display screen positioned between a specially designed speedometer and rev counter which provides the same information and functions as the Standard and Enhanced clusters but in addition gives the driver visual control of the multimedia and audio functions, including auxiliary input and phone control. Being simple and intuitive to operate, all levels of Ford's new HMI system follow strict, straightforward and logical rules and combine critical areas of ergonomic development to optimise the interaction of the driver with the vehicle features, comfort and entertainment systems. Advanced Navigation, Audio and Communication
Systems All new Mondeo models feature a 3.5 mm 'aux in' socket in the glove box for easy connection of portable audio and MP3 devices. In addition, optional navigation guidance is provided through a choice of CD or DVD based navigation systems. Full details of available HMI, navigation, audio and communications systems will be released closer to launch. New Keyless Entry and Keyless
Start Where the option is taken for keyless entry, a conventional mechanical key is no longer needed to unlock the car. Instead, the car uses three external antennae to detect the presence of the correct fob within a small boundary around the car's body. The keyholder simply pulls a door handle to gain entry to the cabin or the handle on the bootlid or tailgate to access the rear load area. Titanium X and Ghia X models are equipped with keyless start as a standard feature. As the driver enters the car with the correct fob about their person, three internal antennae detect its presence. The engine is then started with one press of the Ford Power start button while the driver depresses the clutch pedal on manual transmission models, or the brake pedal on automatics. This sequence is thought to reduce the risk of a child inadvertently starting the engine. New Ford Easyfuel System for Capless
Refuelling The system guarantees against both petrol and diesel misfuelling at the filling pump as the fuel filler neck aperture has been specifically designed around the different sizes of fuel nozzles. Ford has engineered its system only to allow the nozzle that matches the corresponding fuel type of the car to enter the filler neck. Initially shown as a concept technology at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Ford Easyfuel system was awarded 'Idea of the Year Award' in the UK's Autocar Magazine 2005 Awards. Hill Launch Assist Ford Precision Drive: New Mondeo
Driving Quality While the vehicle delivers superior driving quality with exceptional steering, handling and ride, Ford's optional new Interactive Vehicle Dynamics Control (IVDC) with Continuously Controlled Damping (CCD) can be specified for even better handling, comfort and stability, plus shorter braking distances. The CCD system continuously adjusts the damper properties to the current road and driving conditions and offers the driver a choice of three different settings: Comfort, Normal and Sport. The system has been tuned extensively to the specific weights and wider track of the new Mondeo. New Mondeo's driving quality attributes will be packaged as Ford Precision Drive to reinforce Ford's leadership credentials firmly in customer minds. Recognising that Ford has a strong heritage of acclaimed driving dynamics to live up to, the Mondeo development team has paid special attention to the car's suspension and steering system. The major modifications include:
Refined Suspension System The system also incorporates other benefits to enhance the Mondeo driving experience, including isolated subframes, control arm hydro bushings and S-shaped springs, plus dual path strut mounts. At the rear, new Mondeo uses a new version of a proven multi-link rear suspension design with an isolated subframe mounting system featuring rubber bushings. This suspension concept is already familiar in the Ford S-MAX 'Control Blade' system design and uses four links to control each wheel precisely. Reduced Noise, Vibration and Harshness and Improved Sound
Quality The combined effect of all the engineering actions that have been implemented is an overall improvement in terms of noise reduction within the cabin of more than 3dB across the whole frequency range in comparison to the previous Mondeo. Wind noise levels, measured in Ford's state-of-the-art aero-acoustic wind tunnel are the lowest of its vehicle class. The low sound pressure levels and source harmony achieved for engine, road and wind noise contributions reinforce the quality ambience of the new Mondeo interior. New Mondeo Powertrains From late 2007, the range will be expanded with a new 2.3-litre Duratec HE 161 PS 4-cylinder petrol unit, plus a new Durashift 6-speed automatic transmission featuring a Sport mode that changes gear at higher engine revs. Delivering an optimum blend of performance and economy, the range of engines offers low noise levels coupled with excellent driving quality. The following engine and gearbox combinations are available, depending on market:
From late 2007, a new and advanced Durashift 6-speed automatic transmission with Sport mode will be available as an option with a 130 PS version of the 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engine as well as being the standard transmission for the new 161 PS, 2.3-litre Duratec petrol unit. New Mondeo Driver Assistance and Safety Systems Using the basic foundation of the car's ultra-stiff body structure, the new Mondeo features an impressive no-compromise array of active and passive safety technologies. The new Mondeo also features an airbag for the driver's knee area and a horizontal stroking steering column which, together, have further enhanced Ford's acclaimed Intelligent Protection System (IPS). Active safety systems are intended to aid the driver in safe driving and the avoidance of a collision, while passive safety systems protect the occupants and help reduce and avoid injuries. The following active safety features for driver assistance are standard:
For added reassurance, a host of new driver assistance features can be specified as optional equipment (depending on series and powertrain) including:
The following passive safety features come as standard on all series of the new Mondeo:
Advanced Manufacturing Technology A key development in the technology used to build the new Mondeo is the utilisation of laser-brazing. Conventionally, the bodyside and roof panel of a car are welded together, leaving a joint that is traditionally covered with a plastic trim. With laser-brazing, the roof and bodyside can be joined together more effectively and without a visible join for a high quality appearance. This technology is new to Ford and was fundamental in helping to deliver the new Mondeo's expressive design and high levels of craftsmanship. Ford of Europe's Commitment to Sustainability
The reflected indicators include life cycle global warming, life cycle air quality, use of sustainable material, restricted substances including allergy-tested interior and drive-by exterior noise as well as social and economic aspects, which include pedestrian and occupant safety, mobility capability and cost-of-ownership. Using the PSI, Ford can target continuous improvement from one vehicle generation to the next. Sustainability plays a key role in Ford Motor Company's policies. The development and integration of a sustainability management system encompasses the pursuit of improved air quality and fuel efficiency during the vehicles' life cycles, together with built-in recoverability at the time they have completed their useable life. Ford Motor Company is committed to socially and environmentally responsible manufacturing and since 2000 Ford facilities worldwide, including Genk, have improved energy efficiency by over 16 per cent. Ford is targeting a further year on year 1 per cent improvement. A Car to Change Perceptions "We want the new model to change fundamentally the overall perception of Ford Mondeo in Europe," said Joe Bakaj, Ford of Europe's Vice President for Product Development. "New Mondeo has built on all of the strengths of its predecessor but now has more design emotion, more refinement, more technology and more presence. We're proud of it and we know our customers will be too."
Ford of Europe's no-compromise 5-seater gets a dynamic new look for 2007, along with a host of new features inside and outside the vehicle. The agile and compact Ford C-MAX sits alongside the Ford S-MAX Car of the Year 2007 to provie a new family of stylish and flexible people movers with the added benefit of class-leading driving dynamics. Despite its distinctive new look, the new Ford C-MAX has lost none of its acclaimed features. In particular, its bespoke and flexible 'Comfort Seat System' is still available and allows comfortable seating for three people in the second row or the unique ability to fold away the rear centre seat and allow the outer seats to converge diagonally and move back to provide even more leg and shoulder room for two passengers. The exterior and interior details, however, have been improved, and the car features a completely redesigned front end incorporating elements of Ford of Europe's 'kinetic design' form language. This combines hard lines with muscular, flowing forms to represent a feeling of energy in motion even when the vehicle is stationary. Already evident in the new Ford Mondeo, the Ford Galaxy and Ford S-MAX models, key 'kinetic design' elements transform the face of the new C-MAX, giving it a sporty and more expressive character with enhanced emotional appeal. Giving the C-MAX a fresh new face and repositioning it alongside the S-MAX allows Ford to underline the breadth of its product portfolio, as well as offer two spacious family vehicles that customers want to own, rather than vehicles they have to own. The Ford line-up of people movers is comprehensive, with the five-seat C-MAX and 5+2-seater S-MAX as tailored, dynamic and highly flexible solutions for customers who want to maximise driving enjoyment, plus the more traditional, full size seven-seat Galaxy MPV for maximum family space. "The cornerstone of our 'MAX' strategy is to give customers all the features, space and flexibility they need from a family vehicle, but to style the vehicles in a way that allows them to stand out in the crowd, and above all to maximise driving pleasure," said Stephen Odell, Vice President of Marketing, Sales and Service for Ford of Europe. "Both the new C-MAX and the bigger S-MAX are true to this concept versatile, comfortable and spacious, yet also great fun to drive." Fresh and Contemporary Exterior Ford C-MAX now has the looks to match the way it drives. At the front, the bumper, grilles, bonnet, headlamps and fog lamps have been redesigned to give new Ford C-MAX a distinctive MAX family look and style. The sculpted front bumper is a high quality, one-piece design which incorporates a new and distinctive lower trapezoidal grille giving the car a muscular and solid stance. The lower sides of the bumper integrate new vertical fog lights. The most distinctive feature of the new front end is the new trapezoidal lower grille which combines with a new upper grille, headlamps and three-plane bonnet to reinforce the sporty stance of the new C-MAX. The upper grille has been redesigned and now incorporates a thick chrome lip on the leading edge of the bonnet as well as a larger Ford oval both key identifiers for the new Ford 'face'. The three-plane, sculpted bonnet features two distinct lines which flow from the windscreen to the upper grille edges, providing a visual 'power bulge'. At the rear, new C-MAX features a new bumper which is also smoother, rounder and a little deeper. A key feature at the rear of the car is the redesigned vertical tail lamps which now use LED technology through clear lenses, giving a clean and contemporary look. "Integrating elements of 'kinetic design' into this redesigned model has been a special challenge. We wanted to bring the vehicle in line with the new members of the family, notably S-MAX, but we also needed to preserve the integrity of the overall C-MAX design," explained Claudio Messale, C-MAX Chief Designer. Technologies for Comfort and Safety Bold new headlamps emphasise high technology and high visibility. When Bi‑Xenon lamps are fitted, a distinctive light strip runs along the top line of the lamp unit and replaces conventional parking light bulbs. These strips feature light blue illumination which adds extra class to the vehicle's overall appearance. The standard LED tail lamps are a 'first' for Ford and add to the stylish contemporary finish and energy of new Ford C‑MAX. The new tail lamps use LEDs to provide a strong graphic pattern of dots which, when lit, makes Ford C‑MAX immediately recognisable from a distance. Cost of ownership is further enhanced with stylish power foldable mirrors with integrated indicators on high series models: When folded, they reduce the likelihood of damage in tight parking situations. A new feature for C-MAX is an optional panorama glass roof which makes the spacious interior even more airy. Covering almost the entire roof area and maximising light and visibility, dark‑tinted to avoid glare, it has internal blinds that can be closed to provide shade and privacy when required. The panorama roof has a 'Solar Reflect' coating to minimise heat intrusion, thus providing a comfortable interior climate that adds to safe vehicle operation. Another new C-MAX feature is blue glass for the Titanium series, lending even more style and sparkle to the 'modern techno' personality of this top-of-the-range model. Premium Quality and Flexible Interior All the small details add up to a high level of perceived quality and make a lasting impression on the customer. Reflecting the 'kinetic design' elements of the redesigned exterior, the new C-MAX interior features offer a fresh visual impact with more interest and drama. Red graphics for the instrument cluster as well as red illumination of switches and dials plus optional Dual Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (DEATC) and the wide variety of in-car infotainment systems provide visual consistency with S-MAX as well as a new level of elegance. An all-new design of optional Sony in-car entertainment systems is available for C-MAX and these are designed to integrate seamlessly into the new centre stack. These high-end entertainment systems are available with CD player or integrated 6-CD changer. For portable audio connectivity, a 3.5 mm socket is now standard equipment and is conveniently located in the centre console. Standard MP3 players can easily be connected with the audio system. A new centre console for high series models features a flowing design which links to the instrument panel, and includes an integrated sliding telescopic armrest for added front seat comfort. The interior door panels have also changed, with a new soft-touch roll top for Ghia and Titanium models. Other features which add to the more contemporary feel of the new C-MAX interior include newly designed steering wheel rim with thumb rest area for the Trend series and a new vertical lift, manual Z-shaped handbrake that is easy to use and compact, leaving enough space in the centre console for a 1.5 litre bottle. New ambient lighting in warm amber shines down on the centre console area from above. New interior environment colours (Arizona/Biscuit, Ebony/Pewter and Ebony/Dark Flint) provide a warm atmosphere and complement a range of new exterior colours. Sculptured sport seats with increased side support, unique trim and new saw-style stitching enhance both driver orientation and style, while for the rear passengers Ford's bespoke C-MAX Comfort Seat System remains standard for high series models. The C-MAX Comfort Seat System provides comfortable seating for three people in the second row or the unique ability to fold away the rear centre seat and allow the outer seats to converge diagonally, thus providing even more leg and shoulder room for two passengers. For maximum luggage carrying capacity, each of the three rear seats can be individually tipped, tumbled or completely removed. Wide Customer Choice The Ghia and Titanium models sit at the top of the C-MAX range, with the new Titanium series delivering maximum comfort combined with 'modern techno' features and style. Standard exterior features like blue tinted glass and 17-inch multi-spoke alloys with 205/50 tyres plus interior elements in "brushed chrome" form an attractive package for customers with an inclination towards the combination of technology and innovation. Both Ghia and Titanium series can be further upgraded with an X-pack, featuring full leather trim with a 6-way power adjustable driver seat, 4-way manual height adjustable passenger seat both of them heated and privacy glass for the Ghia. For the Titanium series, the X-pack includes the new panorama roof, sport seats with partial leather trim, Bi-Xenon headlamps as well as unique front upper and lower grilles. The optional Sport pack offers an even more dynamic experience with a lowered sport suspension, specially designed 17-inch alloy wheels, sport seats and a leather steering wheel. New alloy wheel designs enhance customer choice and wheel sizes range from 16- to 18-inch. In addition, customers have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of optional features and accessories offered by Ford Customer Service Division FCSD, including different body styling kits to further underline the car's dynamic character. Ford C-MAX Safety and Driving Quality New C-MAX now benefits from 5mm of extra track width which guarantees confidence, comfort and control in any driving situation. Other C-MAX active safety features like ABS, EBD, EBA and ESP together form a system that help drivers address critical situations with a greater margin of safety. A new and additional safety feature is the Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS) which greatly improves lighting efficiency and provides better visibility when cornering. AFS is available with conventional halogen lamps which swivel in corners to provide better illumination. According to the steering angle and the driving speed, they slightly pivot their beams to light the road ahead. Passive safety in C-MAX starts with its structural integrity an ultra stiff body shell and a rigid passenger safety cell. Both are inherent to Ford's Intelligent Protection System (IPS) which comprises state-of-the-art safety features. In addition to full-size airbags and side airbags for driver and front passenger, Ford IPS in C-MAX also includes side curtain airbags for the first and second row, pretensioners and load limiters for the front seat belts, a load limiting steering column and a pedal intrusion prevention system. Three-point seat belts are standard for all rear seats, while ISOFIX brackets are available for the outer rear seats. This arrangement promises not only comfort, but also top-notch safety for travelling children: the original Focus C-MAX achieved a four-star Euro NCAP rating for child safety. Ford C-MAX Powertrains Duratec Petrol Engines These modern engines feature aluminium cylinder blocks and cylinder heads for reduced weight and a lower centre of gravity. For motorists looking to make a more positive contribution to the environment, new C-MAX is also available with a 1.8-litre Duratec HE Flexifuel engine. Without compromising power and driving fun, the C-MAX Flexifuel can run on any mix from 100 per cent petrol to 85 per cent bio-ethanol fuel blend (E85). Since bio-ethanol is derived from renewable biomass sources, the use of bio-ethanol reduces CO 2 emissions by up to 80 per cent by closing the CO 2 circle (well-to-wheel perspective). Ford's affordable Flexifuel models are part of the company's broad portfolio of advanced environmentally friendly technologies. Today, 80 per cent of Focus sales and 40 per cent of all Ford sales in Sweden are Flexifuel models. Focus and C-MAX Flexifuel vehicles are now available in ten European countries. Also, customers choosing Ford's 2.0-litre Duratec HE engine in selected markets can order it fully converted for use with Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) or Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). Duratorq TDCi Diesel Engines Four engines with 1.6-litre, 1.8-litre, and 2.0-litre displacements are available, two of which are offered with a standard Diesel Particulate Filter system. Power bands range from 90 PS (66 kW) to 136 PS (100 kW); with maximum torque figures from 215 Nm to an impressive 320 Nm. All of these engines deliver strong pulling power, but not at the expense of fuel consumption. In combined mode (93/116/EG), new Ford C-MAX equipped with the 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi engine consumes just 4.8 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres and even with the top-of-the-range 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi DPF engine, C-MAX consumes just 5.8 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres in combined mode. Transmissions
Building on Success "We wanted to improve the current model's strengths even further and looked closely at the success of S-MAX when developing the new C-MAX," concluded Gunnar Herrmann, Vehicle Line Director for Medium Cars, Ford of Europe. "We're delighted with the end result and believe the new model combines a fresh and dynamic new look with a host of new features and, above all, premium car levels of quality." The new Ford C-MAX goes on sale across Europe from April 2007. |
