Turbo Power For Fiat Punto

27th September, 2007

Fiat Punto Sport

Fiat will add a new turbo model to the slow-selling Australian Punto line-up in early 2008 with the arrival of the Fiat Punto Sport 1.4 T-Jet. It features 0-100 km/h time of 8.9 seconds and a top speed – where the law permits – of 195 km/h.

The new 1.4 16v T-Jet engine delivers a maximum power output of 90 kW at 5,000 rpm and peak torque of 206 Nm, 200 Nm available from 1,700 rpm. This torque and power combination means that in-gear flexibility is improved, when compared to other Punto models, and that means fewer gear changes and a more relaxed drive, but with a response available at the press of the accelerator.

This is achieved thanks to the low inertia of the turbocharger which delivers the instant performance in response to the application of the accelerator. The smooth acceleration enhances the Fiat driving experience. Yet consumption remains low: 6.6 l/100 km in the combined cycle and reduced CO2 emissions (155 g/km).

The Fiat Punto Sport 1.4 T-Jet, for which prices and specifications will be announced when it goes on sale, will sit alongside the Fiat Punto Sport 1.9 JTD, with which it shares trim and equipment, as the top versions of the Fiat Punto. Time will tell if there is a market for more versions of the Punto which must be one of the most disappointing new cars ever released in Australia, as it relates to the customer take-up rate.

Fiat has decided to even try selling the new Punto Abarth, which is said to be scheduled for a local arrival in mid-2008.
