  • Journey continues the Dodge brand’s Australian expansion
  • Offering versatility, safety, loads of storage and seating flexibility
  • Seven-passenger seating is standard on all models
  • Powertrain options include petrol and diesel and an all-new dual-clutch automatic transmission

The all-new Dodge Journey is engineered to meet life’s changing demands by offering a unique combination of versatility and flexibility in a sporty design package. It takes on the practicality of a people mover, the flexibility of an SUV and the overall efficiency of a passenger car.

“Active life styler’s expectations will be exceeded with so many user friendly amenities on the all-new Dodge Journey,” said Gerry Jenkins, Managing Director, Chrysler Australia. “This is a unique vehicle that will appeal to a crowd of consumers who want a reasonably priced, fuel efficient vehicle with seven seats today - not tomorrow.”

The powertrain choices for Dodge Journey have Australian customers in mind - a 2.7-litre V6 petrol engine linked to a six speed automatic transmission, which is standard across the range. Also on offer is a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine matched to a Chrysler-Getrag produced six-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission.

“Offering Journey to the Australian market was an easy decision - seven seats, six airbags, ESP, automatic transmission and Dodge good looks are all standard across the range,” said Jenkins.

Clever, flexible seating and storage combinations include standard seven-passenger seating with spacious cargo room and all the safety equipment consumers expect from Dodge. Spacious storage bins, hidden in the floor and under the front passenger seat cushion, combined with two powertrain options, make Dodge Journey flexible and functional.

Bold Proportions

From the front, the signature Dodge crosshair chrome grille with the Dodge Ram head in the centre hammers home the Dodge brand message that Journey is bold and capable. Modern-looking quad halogen headlamps provide excellent road lighting. Standard fascia-mounted fog lamps strengthen the contemporary look and help boost visibility during bad weather. Body-colour fascias provide a monochromatic look that neatly frames the chrome crosshair grille and headlamps.

From the side view, the horizontal line of the aluminium bonnet, the long daylight opening and the low-gloss black appliqués on the B- and C-pillars give the appearance of a long greenhouse. Sculpted wheel arches emphasise Journey’s sporty appearance. An available high-contrast black roof rack with buffed stainless steel roof rails adds utility and completes the side view.

The rear view of the Dodge Journey elicits as much excitement as the front. The single piece, lightweight liftgate includes an integrated spoiler that delivers improved aerodynamics. Four-piece jewelled red taillamps span the liftgate and the body, featuring a curve that gives the Journey added style and sportiness. The rear glass on the liftgate’s lower edge follows the curvature of the taillamps to improve visibility through the rear window.

Interior

A key target for the Dodge Journey design team was delivering a practical, flexible interior, with innovative seating and storage features.

Storing things “under the front seat” takes on an entirely new meaning thanks to available Flip ’N Stow in-seat storage. The front-passenger seat cushion is hinged and, when flipped forward, reveals a large 273 x 222 millimetre bin. The bin is large enough to store a purse, umbrella, PDA or MP3 Player with the seat cushion down.

Dodge Journey rear doors open 90 degrees, making it easier for people to get in and out of the second row and gain access to the third-row seat.

The all-new Dodge Journey features stadium seating, which gives passengers in the second and third row the ability to see outside the vehicle, which is especially helpful for keeping young passengers entertained on long drives. The second-row H-point is 40 millimetres higher than the first row. The available third row sits another 17 millimetres higher than the second row and 57 millimetres higher than the first-row seats.

Located in the floor behind the front-row seats are two standard storage bins that are designed to hold drinks plus ice or other items, conveniently out of sight. For added convenience, bins feature latching lids and removable, washable liners, so they are easy to clean. The second row also slides rearward 60 millimetres, for 120 millimetres of total seat travel, providing extra leg room for taller passengers.

The available third-row seat is easy to operate and get into thanks to Tilt ’N Slide second-row seats. With the push of a single lever on the side of the seat back, seat cushions easily fold upward and the seat slides forward. The 50/50-split-folding third-row seat provides enough room for two passengers on an as-needed basis. The seatback reclines six degrees to make the ride even more comfortable. A rear in-floor hidden storage bin located behind the third-row seat is standard on all models.

The Dodge Journey also features two types of seat upholstery. YES essentials stain-resistant, odour-resistant, anti-static seat fabric is standard on the SXT. Leather trim is standard on R/T models.

Powertrain

Dodge Journey features two engine and transaxle combinations that meet the needs of a diverse group of buyers. These include an efficient and powerful 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine and a petrol 2.7-litre V6 engine with a six-speed automatic transaxle.

The 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine is available on the Dodge Journey R/T and positions the Journey competitively in its class for power, torque, acceleration and fuel economy. Maximum power is 103 kW and peak torque is 310 Nm. The 2.0-litre engine achieves fuel consumption ratings of 7.0 L/100km with the all-new six-speed dual-clutch automatic transaxle.

The Dodge Journey SXT and R/T arrives with a 2.7-litre V-6 engine as standard. The 2.7-litre engine comes coupled with a six-speed automatic transaxle and the engine produces 136 kW and 256 Nm of torque. The 2.7-litre petrol engine delivers useful performance and a fuel consumption rating of 10.3 L/100km (combined).

Dual-clutch Transmission Technology

Chrysler’s dual-clutch transmission technology improves fuel economy and CO2 emissions by reducing parasitic losses—first, by eliminating the torque converter and second, through the use of synchronisers instead of shift clutches.

The dual-clutch transmission is an automatic transmission which utilises dual launch and shift clutches with a manual transmission style lay-shaft gear arrangement, instead of a conventional torque converter and planetary gears. One clutch drives the odd numbered gears and reverse, while the other clutch drives the even numbered gears. During shifts, the next gear is anticipated and pre-selected. Then one clutch is opened while the other is closed, allowing shifting without torque interruption. The result is quicker acceleration and refined shift quality. Further, with the lay-shaft arrangement of gears, there is increased flexibility to optimise gear ratio selection for performance and fuel economy.

The all-new dual-clutch transmission does not require a torque converter to transfer engine torque to the transmission. Instead, it uses two wet multi-plate clutches. With the wet multi-plate clutch system, the clutch components are bathed in lubricating/cooling fluid in order to provide adequate thermal capacity.

The wet multi-plate clutch system uses hydraulic pressure to actuate the clutches and provide for gear selection. With this system, the power flow from the engine to the transmission is not interrupted during a shift, resulting in a power-on shift. This means that there is less torque disturbance than a conventional planetary automatic transmission with torque converter. Also, by eliminating the torque converter and reducing the number of shift clutches, parasitic losses are reduced leading to improved fuel economy.

Safety and Security Features

Safety is top of mind for customers, and the Dodge Journey delivers with standard Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM), three-row side-curtain air bags, front seat-mounted side air bags, multi-stage driver and front-passenger air bags and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS).

Standard safety equipment includes:
· Advanced multi-stage front air bags
· Low-risk deployment front-passenger air bag
· Front seat-mounted side air bags
· Supplemental side-curtain air bags (all three rows)
· Structural driver and front-passenger knee bolsters
· Advanced anti-lock braking system (ABS)
· Electronic stability programme (ESP)
· Brake assist
· All-speed traction control
· Electronic roll mitigation (ERM)
· Trailer sway control
· Tyre pressure monitoring

· Side guard door beams in front and rear doors

Structure

With more than one-third of its body structure consisting of high-strength or ultra-high-strength steel, the all-new Dodge Journey provides drivers and passengers a safe, solid structure that delivers excellent impact performance, a smooth ride and solid handling.

The Dodge Journey incorporates world-class sealers and sound-deadening materials to minimise road, wind and powertrain noise. By mass, 36 percent of the vehicle structure contains hot stamped and high-strength steels for optimised weight and structural performance. Extensive use of dual-phase steels in the front and rear rails, tunnel reinforcements and sills permit these components to handle greater loads while still being relatively easy to stamp and control dimensionally. Hot-stamped steel A- and B-pillars reduce upper body weight in the Journey by 13.6 kilogrammes compared with conventional steel equivalents. Dodge Journey also features a composite liftgate, which is an alternative to traditional steel and reduces weight by 20 percent. This lightens the vehicle and makes the liftgate easy to close.

The two-box design of Dodge Journey, as well as its many functional requirements for seating, cargo, storage and safety, defined its structure.  Journey utilises next-generation elastic adhesives to add strength to joints. Effective joint designs create a rigid structure, minimising noise, vibration and harshness inputs to the passenger compartment and increasing body stiffness through enhanced structural continuity.
