Chrysler today confirmed that the 246 kW high performance Chrysler Crossfire SRT-6 will be sold in Australia later this year, in both Coupe and Roadster versions.

The newest addition to the Chrysler stable features a hand-built 3.2-litre supercharged V6 engine, boasting 246 kW of power and 420 Nm of torque and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in an impressive five seconds.

The SRT-6 combines performance-tuned ride and handling characteristics, world-class braking, performance-themed exterior design elements and interior appointments.

The Australian market launch of the Crossfire SRT-6 is scheduled for the middle of 2005.

“It’s very exciting that we’ve secured the Crossfire SRT-6 for Australia,” said Gerry Jenkins, managing director, Chrysler Jeep Australia.

“This high performance car provides driving enthusiasts outstanding, balanced performance in an absolutely stunning package.

“While it’s too early to talk about price, it’s fair to say that the Crossfire SRT-6 will stand alone in value for an out an out performance car,” stated Jenkins.

The Crossfire SRT-6 Coupe and Roadster are the first SRT vehicles for the Chrysler brand and the first SRT vehicles to be introduced outside of North America.

Standing for Street and Racing Technology, SRT is Chrysler’s performance arm, combining the Chrysler Group’s extensive motor sport engineering expertise, its renowned Dodge Viper development team, and its Mopar performance parts engineers.

The SRT-6 has been on sale in America since July 2004 with the car enjoying solid sales, winning over performance enthusiasts drawn to its unique looks and exceptional performance.

The Crossfire SRT-6 adds to Chrysler’s growing stable of cars in Australia, which now includes the retro PT Cruiser – recently given a more powerful 2.4-litre engine, the dynamic Crossfire Roadster and Coupe and the ultimate people moving Grand Voyager with Stow ‘n Go.

The striking HEMI powered Chrysler 300C, named North American car of the year, will also join the family late this year. Stephen Walker, Next Car's Editor, predicts the performance version of the 300C, the SRT-8, will also make it to Australia. Read our story on the 300C SRT-8 here.

The Crossfire Coupe was launched in Australia in early 2004 with the Crossfire Roadster joining it later that year in August. Sales of the niche model totalled 236 for the year.

The Chrysler Crossfire SRT-6 will be built in Osnabrück, Germany.
