The Editor's comment on this recall ...
"My suggestion to improve the safety aspect of
Chery cars is simple ... take them off the road!"

Every Chery J1 that has been brought into Australia is now the subject of a recall. All 702 units that have arrived locally require urgent corrective attention.

It is understood that the integrity of the frame for the front seats may be compromised.

Recent ANCAP crash worthiness testing revealed that the Chery J1 is hopelessly inadequate in its crash testing performance. The accompanying image reveals the inadequacies of protection in a 64 km/h impact.

The repair of the front seat backrest assembly should improve the current poor safety standard.

The importer and/or dealers will contact relevant owners to arrange correction of the poorly designed and manufactured components.

The recall only involves cars brought into Australia. Presumably, though, every Chery J1 in the world will have the unfortunate problem with front seat strength.
